It was expected the Dallas Cowboys would probably grab an impact pass rusher in the first round of the NFL Draft, but it was who they selected that sent most of their fans into a frenzy.
Opting to forego the more popular linebacker T.J. Watt (Wisconsin) and instead choose defensive end Taco Charlton (Michigan), the call sent a shockwave down the ranks of the team's faithful. Clearly split between factions that vehemently support Charlton versus those who feel like the team whiffed by not grabbing Watt, the Cowboys have one word for those who are calling the pick a bust before a single NFL snap is taken:
R-E-L-A-X.
"[Charlton] comes from a great program," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said, via The Dallas Morning News. "It's hard to get on the field [at Michigan]. He thrives in that kind of environment."
And Garrett believes being forced to practice and prepare against perennial All-Pro offensive tackle Tyron Smith -- combined with potential tutelage from future Hall of Famer Demarcus Ware and a shallow talent pool at the RDE position -- sets Charlton up for success going forward.
"That's a good environment for a young player to grow in," said the 2016 NFL Head Coach of the Year.
