Cowboys place Non-exclusive Franchise Tag on Pickens

Brown may be available for less draft capital, less compensation, and no guaranteed pay after 2026. A lot cheaper and less risky for the acquiring team.
Im assuming a new contract would be in play for Brown as well if he’s about
I personally would take a second and third round pick for 2026 from the Raiders for Pickens.
raiders aren’t ready to compete for the playoffs. They need a young, rookie contract WR to go with Mendoza.

GP seems like a luxury for them. He’s young but he’ll be expensive

Right, because Trysten Hill and Connor McGovern are worth more to this team than George Pickens. Or Trevon Diggs and Neville Gallimore. Or Kelvin Joseph and Osa Odighizuwa. Or Sam Williams and Jalen Tolbert.

Our fans value draft picks and the thought of what could potentially happen with them over the reality of having an All-Pro player.

I agree. But teams rarely if ever use the Transition tag. That is perfect in determining a players value. They should have used that with Dak. A team can make him an offer, if he accepts, the Cowboys can match. No picks are involved. It's straight up what you think the man is worth.
There are ways, though, to give players an offer that the other team has matching if you have enough cap space. The league eliminated the use of poison pills, but front-loading a contract (which we have a tendency not to do) can make it unmatchable.

I'm only in favor of using the transition tags for players who aren't liable to get a game-changing contract, so you can decide whether to match it. A player like Aubrey would be a good example of that. You can let the market set his value knowing you can match it. Of course, considering the tag price for kickers, I'd probably give him the non-exclusive next year so that we can negotiate any trade price.

I would never, ever give Jerry the benefit of the doubt to do the right thing if given two first-round picks for trading Pickens. But some here are even willing to trade him for a 3rd rounder.

This is actually a smart move for once. I honestly would take a 2nd and 3rd rounder if presented and keep it moving.
While I would not take a second- and third-rounder, I do like the fact that he can negotiate with other teams ... because I think that mitigates any hard feelings. A team has to really, really want him to be able to give him a mega deal and give up two first-round picks. Most likely, no team is going to do that, so Pickens and his agent will not be able to gauge his value to hold against the team.

The only person who would be stupid enough to give up two first-rounders would be Jerry. Unfortunately, he is our GM.

Agreed. I think there's a grass-is-greener thought process when it comes to the draft. We want to trade away what we know for what we don't know believing that what we don't know will be better. It doesn't often turn out that way.

It's one of the reasons I don't mind trading late-round picks for proven NFL players. Sure, you are not going to get top-quality players by doing that, but you can get contributors that most late-round picks don't even turn out to be. Honestly, if the right player is offered, I don't even mind trading early-round picks.

You could also draft a solid one tech with the second round pick and a nickel cornerback with the third. You can also sign Pickens long term and be 7-9-1 again.

You're thinking about the old Cowboys. They have evolved. Jerry is saying players who can contribute now.

Now that we have that sorted, have you browsed our gift shop?

Have to ask......shouldn't we stay with a player proving worth vs a player or two hoping for worth? Just sayin'. We have the draft and FA coming.

That's a great point. I never thought of that tactic.

I agree that Aubrey should get that tag next year depending on his current asking price. Because it will be around 7M.

There is reason to believe it could go either way. Especially considering we are talking about Big and Little. But no one can deny things feel different this off season.

This puts the Cowboys in the drivers seat with Pickens. I don't think another team will make him an offer though. If they do, the Cowboys can hold out for 2 first round picks and no team is going to pay that. So if Dallas wants him, they really have him bottled up.

I would not be surprised if the Cowboys did this because they want a trade, or at least would prefer some compensation rather than pay him over $30 million. This really is a win win for Dallas.

I would not be shocked if the Cowboys don't get any offers and rather than pay him the tag amount, which is all due against the CAP this year, they sign a longer term deal before the season starts.

Example after example of how paying your WR a ton keeps you out of the super bowl. SEA does not win the super bowl if they pay Metcalf. Costs you too many good players to pay one player 30+ mil.
