Which is why people should relax.... And also realize the line was more responsible for Murray's year than Murray was.

I think it was more murray, I have went back and watched the games , and he was
sliping thru cracks and small holes , and choosing the right spot to hit.

He was also getting run down from behind and making baffling cuts at times. Murray had 1000+ yards without contact last year. Sure, he went out and got the other 800 yards, but that means more than half of his performance was due moreso to the line's effort than his own.

that is a flawed stat, it was murray choosing where to run, that got most of the yards without contact.
many runs were to the outside where is was wr or TE blocking.
That stat makes it sound like there were huge holes to run thru , but that isnt true.

June position rankings. You know it's slow when these are the hot topic. Utterly meaningless.

And for the fans who think it's a slam dunk that our backs won't produce because we didn't sign a big money back or draft one early, please relax. This front office knows what they're doing. R E L A X

Where were the Cowboys ranked this time last year?

There is a lesson in that question.

Great point
I don't remember most thinking we would have a dominate run game
And in reality no one knows which teams are going to have dominate run games this year
Lots of things can effect that such as a bad defense which makes it hard to run if you are playing catch up
Injuries to online, RB or even your QB can really hurt your run game

so disappointed in how this offseason has went losing murry and dez contract troubles we will be lucky if we have the 26 th best rushing attack the under waer thief and and washed up macfadden don't leave u feeling very good.

Everyone says that any scrub can run behind this line. This year we're going to find out.

I think maybe our RBs are being underrated for the time being. Additionally, it's far from a sure thing that we won't add a veteran RB at some point before the regular season is underway. That might possibly affect our RB rating.

Based on what little the Cowboys RB's have done they're not being underrated at all. Jerry isn't banking on any of them he's banking on his OL that's where all the talent and money is. McFadden hasn't done anything of note since 2010. The past 3 seasons his 3.3 yards per carry is the second lowest in the league. Randle was a 5th round pick and the only 2 starts of his career in 2013 produced only 1.9 per carry vs Detroit and 3.4 per carry vs Philly.

As for Ryan Williams he's had 58 career carries averaging only 2.2 per carry and that was back in 2012 with the Cardinals. Lance Dunbar has only had one season where he averaged more than 3.6 per carry and was being fazed out late last season. He never touched the ball in the playoffs and is only still with the team due to Murray's departure. The Cowboys RB"s are average at best until proven otherwise.

Remember that time in 2014 before the season started and our rb group was ranked 21st in the NFL? Yeah that was fun.

That was higher than the team was ranked heading into 2014. The only thing that was ranked high on the team heading into 2014 was the OL. At least heading into 2014 we knew we had a back who could be productive if he could stay healthy. McFadden stayed healthy for one of the only times in his career last season and still only averaged 3.3 a carry. The Raiders had 2 backs average more than he did in 2014. All we can hope for is these backs will surprise like the team did last season. As down as everyone is on this RB group maybe they will surprise. Seldom does anything ever end up being as bad or as good as everyone thinks especially with the Cowboys.

Randle did better than Murray last year. So if your Raiders analogy holds we are golden. Right?

Why we chose this course will be long discussed if they fail.

While messing around with Murray we lost on Ingram, Spiller, Mathews and others. They weren't my first choice, but they are better than our crop.

The Draft didn't go our way for RBs(it went great otherwise) when Gurley, Gordon, Coleman and Yeldon went way before we needed them to go. I would have taken a chance on Ajayi later, but he has some question marks.

I was ultimately holding out hope that the Peterson situation deteriorated to a point where they parted ways, but it looks like he will take the 13m and run, literally.

Randle only had 51 carries every backup RB the Cowboys have had the past decade averaged more yards per carry than the starter and once they got more carries their averages dropped way off. Randle's average has been jacked up due to a few lengthy runs through holes a truck could have driven through. Randle has a had 4 games in his career where he received 10 or more carries and never averaged more than 3.4 a carry in any of those games. He has yet to show he can consistently gain 4-5 yards a carry. McFadden's 3.3 average is over 3 seasons. In 2013 Rashad Jennings had 49 more carries than McFadden and averaged 4.5 per carry compared to 3.3 for McFadden. In 2012 three backs averaged more than McFadden's 3.3 average. McFadden has been consistently unproductive the past 3 seasons.

The course the Cowboys have chosen has received a lot of discussion since Murray departed it's already being questioned and training camp is still over a month away. I wouldn't say the Cowboys messed around with Murray they were trying to resign him he was their first priority. Although I don't know the specifics of the contracts I would assume all the backs you mentioned would have come at a higher price than McFadden and Jerry made it clear he wasn't going to put a lot of money on an RB. Jerry had McFadden in his cross hairs all along and doubt he gave much thought to any other back. He chose to go cheap at the position and bank on the talent he has on the OL. The team is taking a huge gamble we'll just have to see how it goes.

AP's situation in Minn would have never deteriorated to the point where they would have given him away. If Jerry didn't want to pay Murray I couldn't see him wanting to pay even more for a 30 year old back and give up some premium draft picks in the process. Never thought for one minute that AP would end up with the Cowboys they simply don't value RB's the way they use to. If the 2015 season doesn't go as well as 2014 in all likelihood it will be due to not having as an efficient running game as last season unless of course Romo were to go down.

If Dallas was only willing to go to 6m on Murray they had to suspect that it wouldn't be enough.

Peterson is a HoF type back and adding him would throw certain limits out the window.

If JJones was locked in on DMC that is a huge gamble.

I'm sure they figured it wouldn't be enough but Jerry made it clear during the season that he felt Randle could be just as effective behind the OL the Cowboys have built. It sounded like he was trying to send Murray's agent a message but I honestly believe there's a part of Jerry that believes just about any good to decent back can be effective behind an OL that will have four #1 picks on it. It's a big gamble but Jerry has always been a risk taker. He said several weeks before the draft he wouldn't rule out using another #1 pick on the OL. He said if they keep strengthening the OL it will put less importance on having an elite runner. If you listen to all his comments he's banking more on the talent he has on the OL than the talent he has at RB.

I felt the only way AP would have ever became a Cowboy is had the Vikings released him and Peterson gave the Cowboys a hometown discount. Jerry knew in all likelihood he would lose Murray and he had his sites set on McFadden from the get go who he coveted coming out of Arkansas in 08. There were reports back then that Jerry was trying to move up for McFadden. With Jerry and McFadden's Arkansas connection along with McFadden growing up a Cowboys fan it only figured he would be on Jerry's radar after Murray left. Jerry knew McFadden would come at a very reasonable price and would relish the opportunity to play for the Cowboys behind their OL.

You've missed the point as to what I attempted to communicate. The point of my message was that the RB group might conceivably be rated higher by the same people IF a competent RB is added to the mix at some point before the season begins. I'm certainly not at all sold on them being as effective without Murray in tow. Make no mistake, there's no question but what their productivity bears the burden of proof, even if the OL is equally effective in 2015 as they were last year. I think Randle is the best of the bunch and will do well if he's able to take the hits.

Nobody knows what the final grouping of RBs will consist of as the regular season commences. Williams and McFadden could easily be eliminated due to injuries. The FO is well aware of the danger. Let's see what we end up with talentwise before assuming this year's ground game is doomed to end in disaster. I never meant to say that this group is being underrated AS IS but that it might end up that way under the conditions I mentioned. I think one or possibly even two vet RBs will be added at some point. It's not a done deal just yet.

Barring a trade for a quality back like a Matt Forte I don't see the Cowboys adding an RB between now and the start of the regular season that's going to increase the rating of the backs they have. There's not a back available or one that could be released this summer that's going to look any better than what the Cowboys currently have or raise the stock of their RB's as a group. The Cowboys have had all offseason to address their RB situation. They made the decision not to pay Murray and settled on McFadden despite his injury history and lack of production. They passed on a back in April in what many rated a very strong RB draft.

Obviously with 3 months before the start of the regular season the Cowboys aren't completely "set" at RB because they're still analyzing their situation. Injuries or a lack of performance by any of the backs could force the team to bring in another back but barring a trade it's highly unlikely the Cowboys will improve on what they have. If the team finds itself in a position where they're having to scramble for a better option at the starting position during camp and preseason they could end up in real trouble. Any miscalculations about the OL making the backs they have better might lead to musical chairs at RB all season.

Not sure how you know for certain if any RB might be released that could aid our cause at RB. I'm not privy to owning the crystal ball that divulges that information. This thing bears watching before I'm inclined to throw in the towel on any glimmer of hope. You might want to reconsider giving up before climbing atop that ledge. A lot can happen in three months. Who knows, you might even be pleasantly surprised in August or September.

Nobody is claiming the situation to be ideal or even promising but nevertheless, it bears watching. The Cowboys' OL will do whatever it can to make the best of a situation that's far from ideal. In the meantime, I won't be troubling myself with visions of our offense's doom and gloom -- it's not conducive to good health. Vet RBs will be waived before the regular season begins. One or two might actually prove worthwhile.

The front office has done a good job the last three years or so, but they was horrible for the previous 20 years. They are overdue for a screw up.
