I can live with it.
I supported Ellis through all the Randy Moss envy and certainly admired how the guy fought back through some devestating injuries (the broken leg complete with titanium rod, and then the achilles). He carried himself as a solid productive player when we didn't have very many.
Then he started whining...
Perhaps he has some productivity left. I hope he does. I hope he finds what he's looking for. But I suspect he's going to find out, like so many aging vets before him, that the better path would have been to be appreciative and supportive of his current situation. Not that it would have assured him a spot this year. I don't think it would've because we are obviously commiting to youth at OLB regardless.
But he could be leaving this organization on far better terms with its fans than he is. He could be tugging at fans heart strings eliciting "there goes a warrior, a leader, a character guy that we're going to miss." Instead I suspect many fans, like myself, are thinking "thanks for taking your distractions somewhere else." I'm also left feeling that for all the good he did his reputation in the early years, he undid a lot of it in his latter years.
Ironically, Greg was happier when we were losers but he was a standout. Easy to be a team player then. When asked to play a role so that the team could be better, he complained - loudly.
Is that unfair on my part? Well if it is, its his fault, because that perception is predictable when you behave like he did.
I suspect Greg & the Cowboys will kiss and make up at some point. But I doubt he'll ever be the favorite son he could have been. Though frankly, I suspect he's fine and will be fine with that.
Adios Greg.
Now who amongst you youngsters wanting opportunity is ready to step forward?
