Jason Cole of B/R is reporting that a Cowboys source has told him that they’re doing their homework on former Cardinals LB Daryl Washington.

Washington was reinstated to the NFL after sitting out three seasons. However, the Cardinals elected to cut him loose a few weeks ago and he’s now an unrestricted free agent.

Washington, 30, is a former second-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2010. Washington has been out of the league since May of 2014 when he was suspended indefinitely for violating the substance abuse policy.

Worked so well with McClain, what could possibly go wrong?

This is interesting. It's always unpopular with these guys with domestic abuse history, but I like that we're willing to try to rehabilitate some of these players. Washington was a hell of a player at one point, too.

Kicking the tires is fine, but 30 Y/O and hasnt played in three years would be an extreme long shot.

I am tired of the practice.

All it does is create an element of unreliability that makes it so that you cannot depend on your own players to get out of their own way.

Here you go into a draft, get your roster where you can start making plans, then a suspension or other mishap happens and it ruins whatever reasonable approach with managing the talent and renders knowing what you have to work with moot.

The home for wayward children approach inevitably blows up in our face. Either we are overestimating our ability to handle them or we are giving too much benefit of the doubt to them.

Enough is enough.

I'd agree that you can't be held hostage by a player with substance issues. But cutting an Orie Lemon or whoever to get Rolando McClain on your team and playing at a high level is a win for the club. Just because these players are place holders, or that a lot of them end badly, doesn't mean it's a mistake to have added them to the roster. Gregory was a mistake because he cost a high pick. McClain (though I never liked the guy) was a net positive for the team, even though he was a headache. Greg Hardy was, briefly, a positive who became a negative and who should have been cut outright midway through that horrible 2015 season.

I don't know what shape Washington is in, and I don't know how committed he is or isn't to having an NFL career anymore, but he's a good player at a position where we could really use another good player. Even if you don't ultimately bring him in, you have to take a look at him.

Where would he play? SOLB? Assuming Lee and Smith stay healthy.

I think linebacker is a position that I expected us to sniff around. I don't know if it will be a name signing or just a guy they have liked when scouting other teams. Linebackers tend to be a pretty high injury rate position and we have a lot of question marks at linebacker. If Lee got injured and had to miss games, things could get dicey very quickly.

Domestic abuser and multiple time failure of the NFL drug program - what could possibly go wrong with this?

Stay far far away.

Does he do drugs? Just asking cause it seems the defensive side of the ball can't say NO

He's at worst, likely a backup and situational player for us.

I don't get the angst. Seems like faux outrage to me. I might get it if the Cowboys are signing him to be our starting MLB.

That's how I feel. I get what Alex is saying about relying on a guy with a history of domestic and substance abuse. But if you're not committing long-term money to him and he's not costing a pick and you're not carrying a bunch of guys like that already (debatable), then it's smart to take these calculated risks. A signing like this could mean the difference between playoffs and no playoffs if he ends up a late-season injury replacement who's significantly better than whatever wanna-be you'd otherwise have signed off the street or brought up from the practice squad. Or, he could be a distraction and you just cut him, assuming your owner gives his HC the leeway to do such things.
