Not sure where the article said he would be an elite TE. If you could point it out

"Gathers spent his rookie season on the Cowboys practice squad, learning what it takes to become an elite tight end in the NFL. "

Maybe he should just focus on learning to be a TE first and leave the "elite" part for when he actually cracks a game day roster.

They were in some blowouts. I'm sure he could've gotten in games in late, enough to give talent evaluators some tape come draft time.
You may be right. I just have a hard time picturing Briles giving him playing time over guys on FB scholarships standing on the sideline waiting for a chance to play. Again, you could be right, but I just don't see it, personally.

CowboysZone LOYAL Fan
People were saying very similar things about Escobar when he first came out. We all know how much production we got out of that.

Not falling for the hype on this one.

Been listening to the draft show on the Cowboys website this week. They been talking up Alabama's TE. As much as the the Cowboys trading up to the high teens to get him. I think this 2016 draft class has been special and I would give each of those players every chance possible to help this team. I would still draft a TE for insurance. But I would get one in the later rounds.

I think his progress will be determined by the work he is willing to put in. The guy has the athletic ability
That's it
If he devotes himself he can make it
Catch a few thousand passes on the practice field, work on blocking and route running
Lots of work but it's up to him to put in the work

yours is a reasonable response consider this; their body type appear entirely different i.e. Escobar doesn't look stout and seems too gangling to be a heavy pusher
Rico you can see it right away. That begs the question why the FO thought Escobar could block or learn to block?

Isn't he a natural receiver or seems that comes out of articles. My thoughts are more about blocker

the man is 280-290lb...
i suspect he could block better than Escobar during the season.
the concern is probably blocking assignments and adjustments that could put QB at risk.

I guess Im deem [I know some think so here] but someone said that he might be ready 2018?
Why cant blocking assignments & adjustments be grasped over last season and this off season?

They were smart and had him play tackle early to help with his blocking
Don't know about his receiving but having not caught a pass since 8th grade I would assume he would need work but who knows
The work he puts in this off season will be vital in whether he makes the roster or spends another year on PS

Who to block is very important
But with his size it's really about getting in the way of defender. Pancaking a guy looks good but just property technique and walling a guy off is huge

just my guess.
adjustments have to be almost second nature given the little time to think on a play.
the man has not played a down in high school or college.

from all sources, his pass catching talent is there - best rebounding power forward in college last year?
then with 280-290 lb, he would only need to adjust to be a powerful power.
i am getting sick of seeing people go by witten in many circumstances due to lack of agility.
i still remember the agility he showed in the after catch video in the preseason.
hopefully he is the heir apparent or at least a really good #2.

Cowboys Rico Gathers: Tony Romo’s favorite scout team weapon?

http://thelandryhat.com/2017/01/27/cowboys-rico-gathers-tony-romos-weapon/

A Dallas Cowboys insider shares a story about the development of the team’s 2016 sixth round selection and former basketball player turned tight end Rico Gathers.
If you are the final player selected in the NFL Draft, they call you Mr. Irrelevant. If you are the final selection by an NFL franchise, you’re chances of making the team’s roster are likely slim. And if you are attempting to make the transition from college basketball back to football, a sport you haven’t played since middle school, and you’re the team’s last pick in the draft: then you’re chances of making an NFL roster are minuscule.

Despite the long odds, former Baylor basketball star Rico Gathers attempted just that, decalring himself eligible during last year’s NFL Draft. Despite not having played football since the eighth grade, the Dallas Cowboys saw enough potential in Gathers to selected him with their final pick in the sixth round, 217th overall. That also happened to be Dallas’ final selection in that draft.

The very definition of a developmental player, the 6-6, 273 pound Gathers is a tremendous athlete for his size. The All-American power forward known for his gritty play and defensive prowess, is attempting to transition to the NFL in a similar fashion as other former basketball stars like the San Diego Chargers Antonio Gates or the Seattle Seahawks Jimmy Graham...

For those who do not remember this video:

Also from the article...

But the former scout also warned that the still raw prospect will likely not be ready to step up and play a major role in 2017.

Escobar, Hannah and Swain didn't play major roles in 2016. So I'd say Rico is in good company. ;)

It often takes players who have been playing football their entire lives 2-3 years to grasp the NFL game. If he's really going to be a player we probably won't see it much on the field until 2018.
