Cowboys RT Doug Free confirms intentions to retire, passes torch to Travis Frederick

Bryant Crews

Before Tony Romo stole the spotlight with his exodus from his NFL playing career, Doug Free was the first Dallas Cowboy to announce his retirement this offseason. On Monday, the former Cowboys starting right tackle made a public statement on his retirement, confirming those intentions with 105.3 The Fan.

Free played 10 seasons for the Cowboys after being selected out of Northern Illinois University in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.

Since 2010, Doug Free started every Cowboys game he was active for, making 107 regular-season starts. He missed five games in 2011 with an injury. He has been recognized as a leader of the offensive line group for over half a decade, as the club rebuilt the unit following the era of Flozell Adams and Leonard Davis.

I know alot will say whatever, and I've been one of them. To the guys in the lockeroom, he was a leader.

Walking away from the game, with millions and still got your mind. Much respect, even took a pay cut in the process. Might've stole some of that money, but he was a better run blocker than he gets credit for.

Now if hes smart, he can sit back and chill for the rest of his life. Congrats.

Twas a good player for us. Had some rocky seasons, but overall zero complaints to get 10 years(mostly starting) out of a 4th round pick.

That is absolutely true; when you get that much out of a 4th rd pick you really struck paydirt. Outside of Dak of course what other 4th rd picks gave us as much?

How fans react to the mid and low round guys who make the team and end up contributing, or ever starting for 10 years or so in the league says a lot about a general understanding of how teams get built. It's understandable for people to get frustrated when a guy who's never going to be a superstar gets beat now and again, or even the games where he may get outright owned by a better player, but every team needs guys like Free and Carr and Heath who come in and deliver a consistent level of play relative to their ability and who work hard and who earn the respect of their teammates. For every fan who dismissively says Doug Free is garbage, there's a teammate who comes out and says what a good teammate he actually was. That's a pretty good sign if you're a player.

Glad he had enough self awareness to realize he was terrible and needed to move on. Cause lord knows red would have kept trotting him out there for another year

Have 0 issues with Doug as a person. Great guy. His play on the field is no beuno. You could do worse than Doug, but can certainly improve as well.

I disagree.

Carr and Free got paid to be elite at their position and they were average to below average. Can't compare them with Heath because Heath isn't paid like them. If you want to praise a guy like T Will who is making 2 mil a year for solid contributions I hear you, but Carr was making 10 mil/yr and Free was at 8 mil/yr. In the current NFL Free would be the second highest paid RT and Carr would be a top 10 CB.

Players like them on contracts like those are what will prevent us from winning the Super Bowl.
