Cowboys sending wrong message with Jenkins/Scandrick battle

Ok back in the Jimmy days, do you think Jenkins would be starting ahead of Scandrick as the #2 CB? HECK no! Jimmy always sent the right messages to his players. One of those messages were that if you were simply better than someone at your position, you would play and start! Everyone on this board knows that Scandrick is a better player than Jenkins at this point in their careers. But why is Jenkins going to start again? Oh yeah, because we have no leadership and authority at the head coaching position and the GM/owner is most likely pushing for Jenkins to start because he was a "1st round pick." Ahh I miss the old days!!

Not to mention scandrick is a natural in the slot coverage role. That's harder to find than people realize.

Based on what the coaching staff says about Scandrick and the lack of praise Jenkins gets, it's easy to see who's better at this point. Scandrick improved our pass-defense last year and he wasn't even a starter! Yes, I know he was our nickel CB and he was on the field for most of the game, but he's also a sure-tackler and brings an intensity to the game which our defense needs badly. Jenkins will be good, but Scandrick will be GREAT.

A starter has not been announced, the media is just quick to speculate Mike Jenkins will get the nod over Orlando Scandrick due to draft status.

Jenx had more starts last season, 3 versus 2 for Ozone, the same amount of passes defensed and a pick 6.

Scandrick had a great rookie season, but there isn't a big gap between the two with the fifth rounder out in front. The media plays up that angle to entice readers, but they are both good players.

I don't care who starts because both will play a lot regardless, nickel corners get more snaps than some starters do at other positions.

I think Scandrick is better because he was playing the hardest position in the secondary last year as a ROOKIE and played it better than Newman. Jenkins I like, it's just that he isn't a playmaker, just steady. I believe with Scandrick as a starter in the base defense, the kid will be a playmaker.

Too early in their careers and in the season to tell.

The Wrong message the cowboys are sending is that it will put up with a weak coach like Wade Phillips.
Aside from that Jerra has loaded this team with talent. All we need is someone strong like Shanny or Gruden to come along and take the helm.
Wade is everabody's favorite uncle. But it does not cut it in the NFL

pure speculation and opinion on your part.......Scandrick started the season better (with limited duties) but Jenkins made major improvements as season went on ...i think Jenkins will end up being the better corner......(notice i said "i think" ? thats because i realize the difference in opinions and facts)

You're wrong and/or jumping to conclusions on several levels here.

No one has been declared the starter yet, so how can the Cowboys be "sending the wrong message"?

You're basing your opinion of the two players abilities on assumption, not reality. Jenkins' strength is in man coverage, which he wasn't asked to do very often last year. Most accounts say that trend will be reversed this year. Less zone = better Jenkins.

I don't get why fans and media members feel he need to make this into a big deal....we have two young, talented guys at a very important position. Why the fascination with turning it into a problem?

healthy newman is a beast in the slot role, the best scandrick can hope for is to be T.News equal in that capacity.

Heck, if scandrick can play it consistently as well as aaron glenn did that would be a great thing.

Yeah this is a silly thread in general. They "split" 1st team reps in the OTA's and mini-camp. No started has been named. No Cowboys official has said if its a tie Jenkins will start. I realize people want to try and create some good conversation, but this isn't the way to do it. The only message that is being sent right now is there's going to be strong competition.

All I'm asking is for this coaching staff to grow a pair and start the BETTER PLAYER, whoever that may be. I have serious doubts about this coaching staff with getting the BEST players on the field to give you the best opportunity to win ballgames.

Wade Phillips has praised both players, he spoke glowingly about Mike Jenkins having the long arms and speed to be a natural man coverage corner when discussing the defense playing less zone this season.

The lack of praise you speak of is from the media.

They will highlight anything that make Jenx look bad while not making a big deal when the other corners give up plays.
