If he doesn't start he's either dead weight or a progress stopper and being a vested vet his salary is guaranteed for the season if he's on the roster on week one. He's too old and injury prone. Pass.
He's a good veteran player at two positions who already knows the defense for a team that just lost it's starting MIKE for most of the season (if he's not eventually let go outright). It's kind of a no-brainer to add him. If Gachkar or Nzeotcha (those two names are ridiculous, btw) or Wilson can beat him out, that's great. He might be another Jasper Brinkley in that case. But in Durant's case we ought to have a pretty good idea of what he can contribute to us coming in.
As I said above, I like him at WIL if we're in a bind. Either as a replacement for an injured Lee or in moving Lee to MIKE in a pinch. I'm not sure what would happen if we had Durant compete with the younger players at MIKE directly. It might be that we like the younger guys better there. But it's hard to complain with what he gave us at WIL in 2014. He was a really good player there. When we lost him last offseason I thought it was a huge blow at the time, so getting him back is more than just a progress stopper in my book.
