Cowboys TE coach Mike Pope: This needs to be a breakout year for Gavin Escobar

Dallas Cowboys tight end coach Mike Pope recently joined The Musers on KTCK-AM (1310) to talk all things football. Here are some of the highlights:

On where he gauges Gavin Escobar’s progression:

Pope: “I think he’s made a good deal of physical progress over this offseason. I think maybe he made his biggest commitment to working with Mike Wolski in the weight room and those guys. He looks better; he looks more physical and he looks like he’s got a bigger frame with more muscle mass on it. A good part of that’s because a lot of our catches are arriving at about the same time as the defender does. If you’re not physically strong enough to absorb that blow and hang onto the ball, then the quarterback is not going to throw it to you. So that’s been a big thing from the time of the end of the season to when we started our work in the spring. This needs to be, and hopefully will be, a breakout year for him. We’re down a little bit at receiver right now with some of the injuries. So he’s getting more opportunities right now at camp than he might have if we had six or seven receivers that we’re trying to evaluate or play with. He’s taking over some of those roles of some of those receiver positions.”

Escobar's problem with blocking is certainly well documented and I'm not altogether so sure the biggest part of his problem isn't the "want to" as much as anything to do with his physical strength and ability. What he does in the remainder of camp and during the season will be a crucial factor in his future. He sorely needs to make the most of his opportunities while he's still around.

I hope so, been waiting on this guy to show me why we drafted him so high. I think he has ability he just needs to get out there and show he can be a top level TE.

He has a knack for the endzone. If we use him in the redzone, teams may start defending him. If you have to defend a #2TE, what does that mean for Bryant and Williams?

Thought Pope was a great addition to the staff last year.

Has to be hands down one of the best coaching staffs in the league. Not sure how we were able to get Pope, but he is a legitimate coach at this position.

They brought in two of the best coordinators in the game, and where I was worried we were taking a step backwards at the WR coach, we got a coach who I think has really connected with these players.

Only question marks I have are Ben Bloom and Leon Lett, but we'll see what they can do. They seem to have gotten through to Davon Coleman and Tyrone Crawford here.

Not a huge fan of Jerome Henderson, but we'll see what he does this year not having to play cautiously.

That comment aggravates me.

You want the guy to step up? Well the coaches need to step up an fulfill their commitment of getting 2 TEs involved.

Stop blaming the player and look in the mirror.

Gavin has already passed Hanna who was ahead of him on the depth chart last year. I see good things. Not big things. Because we have too many places to go with the ball.

Once agian, no need for Witten to start, let another TE either emerge or fail, but start doing something. Witten and Romo wont be here forever.

This team has a problem. We drafted Written who rarely blocked in college and made him into one if the most complete TEs in the game.

We've dropped picks on great blockers but never thrown to them, now a crap blocker who we won't throw to. I expect Escobar will end up another 2nd rounder who does well elsewhere

Maybe Escobar just isn't that good. At this point if they shifted him for a an RB I'd be OK with that. Don't think he has Romo's trust and unless that changes he will always be marginal regardless of talent.

I've seen enough out of Escobar to believe he has the ability to be at least a decent pass catching TE in this league. He's just too big and fluid to be horrible. If I hadn't seen this happen with players at least 2 times prior (Fasano and Bennett) I would question what I've seen, but it's just not the case. Fasano has been a decent player for years and Bennett has shown himself to be a Pro Bowl type talent. The club has a hard time implementing a secondary tight end and that's on them.

I'm not down on this kid. ..

It's hard to get a shot when the guy ahead of you is mr.cowboy of this generation ,future HOF ,and one of the top 3 TEs to ever lace them up
