Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar doesn’t have timeline for his return

DALLAS
Gavin Escobar spent Wednesday morning walking around and visiting with children at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, part of a charity event the Dallas Cowboys did with WWE Superstars.

Simply being able to move around with no issues is something Escobar enjoyed. He is still in relatively early stages of rehabbing a torn right Achilles, and recently started walking without a boot.

“It’s getting better,” Escobar said. “I’m walking, you know? I wasn’t walking for a while, so it’s nice to move around. Slowly getting better every day. That’s the name of the game.”

Escobar, 25, doesn’t have a timetable on when he’ll be ready for football activities. He isn’t expected to participate in organized team activities in April/ May or minicamp in June.

Escobar could open training camp on the physically unable to perform list, and the team would then evaluate his progress to determine whether he should begin the season on the PUP list too.

For now, though, Escobar is staying patient in his approach. He is doing band work, some lateral movement and recently began squatting again...

Time to move on... Either he has always been an under achiever or we just have never figured out how to incorporate him regularly. It would benefit us to find someone knew and it would be good for him for a new scenery.

He's a good tight end...just had to be behind a Hall of Famer still producing. Injury happens to all players.

If not objective, hell, cut bait on the entire 'lousy' team and just start fishing....yea, right.

Don't try naked and afraid...but before one takes the plane flight, to Formosa, is he still a good red zone target and works well in a two tight end set?

I really don't see a Marsec level beyond I here.

I'd say he'll be missed but missing someone who is being utilized as scarcely as Escobar might constitute an overstated reaction. He's surely battling a tough injury to overcome, though.

I agree hope for full recovery, his blossom never fully opened playing in the shadow of Witten like TE talent before him. He has been injured most seasons and does not have the resiliency that Jason Witten has in abundance, we will be a weaker team when Witten begins his decline.

I still think he's talented and can be a good pass-catching TE. We won't miss him because we've done absolutely nothing to incorporate his strengths into the offense.

Agreed. I think he could be a huge weapon for us, if they truly wanted him to be.

This injury may allow us to sign him long-term at a lower rate. I still believe he is the future at TE here.

Hope trading that 7th rounder last year really pays off off. They may look like they were smart by being unlucky with yet another injury.
I still say they should have drafted Swaim without that trade, and could have got Gibson as an UDFA, or Nzeocha.

Nick Vannett in the 4th round may be an option if they feel they need a TE. I think that is where he is projected to be drafted.

Hanna stepping up is our best shot in Escobar's absence if he is out for for a while recovering. If Hanna can maintain his solid blocking and even catch a pass or 2, we're fine. Swaim just needs to handle the blocking assignments, which he struggled to do at times last season. What good is the 3 TE offense if the 3rd TE can't hold his blocks?

Yeah, the achilles surely hurt his contract leverage, but there's been no evidence of an offensive evolution to use his talents, or a heavier reliance on 12 or 13 sets. He may be covetted somewhere else.

Reminds me of that 350 short block I've had sitting on a engine stand in my garage for over 10 years -- an asset that I just haven't gotten around to utilizing.

Escobar would dominate in New England or New Orleans.

I don't know why Dallas doesn't utilize him more.

I don't, either. I've said it before, but last season after Dunbar went down, he was the next likely 'mismatch' player on the team. Tough to cover him with a LB if you have a QB who can place the ball right, and that's one thing Cassel was able to do when he wasn't busy not-seeing LBs. I thought sure we'd see Escobar emerge finally, and it didn't happen.

I don't understand why he's not used more then he is. We all know he's not a blocking Tight End. We get that. So what? So if he's on the field, The defense knows it's a passing play and it doesn't matter. There's other teams that use receiving Tight Ends like him and have alot of success. Maybe I'm missing something and maybe I'm overrating him as a player but I'm just frustrated with how they use him

Begins his decline? What team have you been watching?

No, it would actually be smarter to hold on to him, even if he doesn't play next year. Then we'd likely get at least a compensatory pick when he goes elsewhere. If we "move on" now and get rid of him, we'd still have to pay a huge chunk of his salary until he was well enough to play.
