Cowboys TE Position - Year Of The Escobar? | Cowboys Nation

In the 2012 NFL Season Bill Belichick and the Patriots unleashed a two tight end attack upon the league using future Hall Of Fame TE Rob Gronkowski and future vertical tan line master Aaron Hernandez. The Pats went on to a 12-4 record and an incredibly exciting Super Bowl loss to the Giants. The Lombardi went to New York but in a copy cat league front offices coast to coast became instantly enamored with the Pats dual TE attack.
Jerry Jones decided he wanted to get on this two TE bus. In the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys selected TE Gavin “Pablo” Escobar to pair with all-world TE Jason Witten and the two TE set hype began at Valley Ranch. It never materialized. The 2013 offseason was the last heard of the vaunted two TE attack in big D. In 2014 the team re-discovered it’s power running identity and the two TE attack faded into memory to resurface momentarily every draft day when Cowboys Nation faithful would wonder if the three TE set was possibly in the works whenever the second round rolled around.
Escobar is big, intelligent and has incredibly soft hands. He is also “blocking challenged,” not being as athletic as predicted and having problems obtaining proper leverage positions while on the move. Though active on game day he has been fairly ineffective his entire NFL career. Then in 2015 he blew out his achilles on the FINAL play of the Cowboys Week 15 matchup with the Jets.
26 receptions for 303 yards and seven touchdowns. That’s what the second round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft has brought the Cowboys. Not what one would call a good return on a heavy investment yet there are rumblings that regardless of the history or the cost, in the last year of his rookie deal Gavin is figuring things out and 2016 may (finally) end up being the year of the Escobar.
Gavin has healed from his Achilles incredibly swiftly. By all reports his rehab went exceedingly well. Rather it was the rehab work or the culmination of multiple off seasons in an NFL strength and conditioning program Escobar is reportedly now moving smoother and more fluid than ever before. He is now showing the athletic ability to slide into a leverage position while on the move which should allow him to vastly improve his blocking. Effort has never been lacking. His hands have never been a problem nor has his work ethic or locker room presence. Opportunity seems to be the primary item that has held Escobar back as raw talent has always been there...
