We're not guaranteed a second for Leary if somebody offers a third will probably take it

A team would have to give up a second round pick if they signed him to an offer sheet and Dallas didn't match. They could potentially work out a trade for something less, but your statement that Dallas isn't guaranteed a second is misleading. They WILL get a second if a team goes to the effort of making a contract offer and Dallas doesn't match.

If Dallas thinks they can win a Super Bowl next season (and since when does Jerry not think that other than in 2014 when they actually were good), I'd keep Leary for depth. He's inexpensive for the talent level he brings. If he played C or T as well he'd be super important. OL injuries are common so there's a great chance that he gets playing time if they hold on to him.

Although it is down the road, it's also possible that he signs a big Parnell sized contract after this coming season when he's an UFA. That could lead to a compensatory pick.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I have a feeling Dallas moves him before that. I know I would move him this offseason.

He could probably get a lot more in a simple trade than he would as a compensatory inclusion.

Help me understand the tender on Heath, what do we get if he signs somewhere else? If nothing, why the tender?

Because if nobody else gives him a contract that's better he has no real option other than to play for Dallas next year at that salary. He could hold out, but Dallas would retain his rights.

Somewhere Adrian Peterson is probably grumbling about slavery. Cruel, $1.6 million/year slavery.

It's all about Jerry's "we are so close to a Super Bowl" vs. "we're going to have to rebuild a while" mindset. And probably how much whisky he has had before noon. If he thinks they are close he will want the depth I think. Last year he was trading picks for depth so hanging on to what you have when you think you can win isn't out of the question.

It's a good situation to have. Usually they are faced with a bloated Carr like contract, an untenable Hardy like situation, or a player like Parnell that they like but another team likes him three times as much and they have to let him go.

Thanks, but I must be dense because I still don't get it...lol. Why would we want to retain the rights of someone who doesn't accept our minimal offer? I thought tenders give us something? I mean he can just sign our tender and be done with it, right?

IDK if there is a rebuild mode anymore. You are constantly reloading.

All we get is the right to match for the lowest tender or 1.6m

We put a 2nd round tender on Leary for 2.5m and the 1st round tender is 3.6m

Players have to sign the tender by mid April, so teams would the draft picks this year if another team signed them to offer sheet and DAL didn't match.

Tenders are not guaranteed so we could always cut Heath any time with no further costs.

Dude relax. They'll likely work out a long term deal with Heath.

Despite all the hate he is a good special teams player and subs in on some specialty packages where he hasn't proven to be the liability fans point to all because of his rookie season struggles.

Also the offseason just started...what exactly "stinks" about it. Free agency hasn't even opened for goodness sakes.

I was not being serious. Signing someone to 1% of the salary cap doesn't move the needle at all.

You need to check your sarcasm meter. It needs calibration.

I agree. At 2.5 mill to me he is worth keeping. Now of course should another team offer a bigger deal then you take the 2nd rd pick and move on. You just hope that 2nd would be from a Jacksonville team or someone with a high 2nd rd pick

It is one way for teams to get players that normally wouldn't sign there as FAs. Teams like JAX, OAK and CLE can have a hard time attracting good players in their prime.

After reading your post, original post applies. But seriously if we could get a third for him, it's done
