Cowboys tendered Alan Ball, Steve Octavien, too

Lost amid all the buzz surrounding the 11 qualifying offers the Cowboys made to their restricted free agents, was the offers made to their two exclusive rights free agents Alan Ball and Steve Octavien.

Ball was tendered a one-year deal worth $545,000 and Octavien a one-year deal at $470,000.

Ball started three games at free safety in Ken Hamlin's absence because of an ankle injury. He finished the year with 19 tackles and one tackle for loss to go with four pass deflections. The Cowboys like his ability to play cornerback and safety. He was also one of their better special teams players with 16 tackles, which was third-best.

Octavien had 12 special teams tackles and two tackles on defense. He played in a reserve role behind DeMarcus Ware. He told me when the season ended the coaches want him to study a guy like Denver's Elvis Dumervil, a shorter pass rusher who led the NFL with 17 sacks. Octavien is listed at 6-0.

Glad to see Ball get tendered. Not a great player but if need be can fill in at both safety or CB for Dallas.

Yeah I really like Ball as well. He makes plays on the ball whenever he gets the opportunity. Plus he carries the added weight well. I remember people being nervous about how skinny he was coming out of the draft.

I don't know if I like the idea of taking Ware off the field. Even for breathers. I guess it will make him a better player to get a few snaps off.

I look for both players to be productive next year.

It would not surprise me to see Ball starting over Newman.

Octavien showed some potential in the preseason. I was hoping he would get some playing time. But, not much opportunity when Ware, James, Brooking, and Spencer are in front of you.

I was thinking the same. I like Ball and think he is a big help because he can fill in at CB or Safety but I don't see him as a full time starter over Newman.

Ball seems to have improved every season so far. Let's hope that continues.

I don't see Ball beating out Newman as a corner. Despite being fast, he's never struck me as the most fluid athlete.

Newman peaked a long time ago.

He stinks now.

And he ain't gonna get any better.

I hope I'm wrong. Just telling it like I see it.

Invest in corrective lenses. If Ball started across from Jenkins he would lead the league in passes thrown to his side.

I'm glad Ball is still here. Hopefully Jerry can give him an extension to keep him around for at least 3 more seasons. I like his potential.

I like Ball. You've gotta have some guys like him -- ones who can do several things well. But the only way Ball starts over T-New is if T-New gets hurt.

Anyone that thinks Ball starts over a healthy Newman truly is blind deaf and dumb.
