Cowboys to exercise fifth-year option on Ezekiel Elliott
https://247sports.com/nfl/dallas-co...ifth-year-option-on-Ezekiel-Elliott-131284808
It's not that the Cowboys see extending Elliott as a "low" priority, as recent headlines would have you believe. Contextually speaking, when comparing his contract to that of Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper and Byron Jones — the other three who are also expected to land extensions soon — Elliott is the only one with a fifth-year option that allows the team to retain him for 2020 with a simple pull of the trigger. This makes for simple logistics, in that the goal would be to secure the services of every player whose contract expires after 2019, first.
The safe bet is Cooper and Prescott will be next to the bank, and then talks on Jones and Elliott will ramp up in a big way.
Cap space is of no consequence at this point for the Cowboys, who have enough room both now and later to get each of the deals done. It's possible Elliott will be a holdout candidate in 2020, assuming things mushroom to that point, but — for now — he's focused on readying for what he hopes is a career-best season under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Considering how dominant he's been in his first three years, that should send a very real chill down the spine of Cowboys' opponents.
With Elliott locked in for at least one more year, it gives the organization more leeway to get the deals on Cooper, Prescott and Jones done...
