And there's even less value where we'll ultimately be picking. We already had a surplus of picks, so there was no need to compile more. I'll change my mind if he parlays them into a veteran player somewhere.

You're gonna get the same player at #75....Andy Levitre was picked by the Bills with our pick, there are about a half dozen guards with similar talent to Levitre still on the board.

Well, the Pats certainly think there's "value" in the second round. Or maybe Jerry thinks the players get better as we go deeper in the draft.
My point exactly. The NFL's elite franchises all went after guys in the 2nd round, while Jerry Jones tried to get cute.

Larry Brown is trying to use $$$ as a justification for the trade. As if a 2nd round contract has an impact on the cap. They must think that listeners are totally cap illiterate.

the 2nd round was one of the best rounds in this draft, we traded out of it and have to wait till the 5th to see that same type of value

yeah, after my initial disappointment, I've started to see things a little clearer now. Clearly there's no starters or must have players available.
We have needs, yet we are going to draft very raw developmental players. The Ratliffs, Craytons, Romos, those guys take YEARS to develop. What about what we are missing today?

btw, the Cowboys have around $22.5 million in dead money this season...

You don 't win with the best value, you win with talent.

If you win with talent, we'd have 6 rings right now. You win by consistently making smart decisions, and getting value with your picks is a smart decision.

Wonder if Patriot fans were embarrassing themselves in their chat rooms earlier today? My guess is 'no.'

Gee you're right, let's get less talented players. The more of them the better.

That's the secret.

And the talent at 69/75 will be virtually identical to the talent at 51 at every position we might possibly draft. So why wouldn't you want another 4th rounder on top of that?

Well, think of how many 2nd round busts we've had in recent years. Maybe trading out of the 2nd isn't such a bad idea if you can draft 2 guys instead of 1. Better chance of finding a keeper. I can also see some of those picks being traded for a 2nd next year, which could be be combined in a deal to move up for another first. Lots of wheeling and dealing to be done before we can make an honest evaluation of this draft. We'll just have to wait and see.

That Patriots picked 4 times in the 2nd round.

They are also going to pick 4 times in the 3rd round.

Dallas: 2 picks in the 1st 100.

Patriots: 8 picks in the 1st 100.

Hard to be pissed at the Pats with that.

See the post above yours.

Jerry is looking for backups, projects and special teamers again. That's what you get on the 2nd day.

That's a different issue. The Patriots came into the draft with ammunition. They're still trading down and moving around in the draft to match their picks to their draft board, like we're trying to do.

So why are a number of different teams moving up? What do they know that we don't? We only netted one extra pick, so how much "value" did we really gain?

This whole thing blows chunks. I hope we get some solid players tomorrow to make up for a horrible trade today.

Other teams have other needs. Teams have traded up to get CBs and QBs, which aren't positions we'd spend a day 1 pick on.

Jerry's not doing anything the Patriots aren't doing. And he's not doing anything we didn't say he should do at the outset of the draft. We're maneuvering so that our picks fit the value on our board. It just so happened we got caught in a bad spot at 51 and we had to bail out.

Stephen comes out and says we're set and we want to bring in competition everywhere and we all applaud. We move to add picks when no good fit is there at 51, and 3/4 of the board goes completely to pieces without even knowing who we're going to end up with yet. It's flat ridiculous.

You just said yourself the Pats are a completely different situation because they came in with more picks, and now you are trying to use them and their numerous 1st day picks to somehow justify Jerry going into late 90's draft backups mode. Which is it?

We have 12 picks tomorrow and many of them we can't even keep. Why weren't they packaged to move up to get some of these players we did want? Why are we moving down to pick more borderline players who won't all make the roster?

I really hope we trade a bunch of these picks for future picks next year because there is no way even half of the12 picks we have will make our roster IMO. I don't mind trading out of 51 if there is nobody we like there but, it makes little sense to trade down (and not get good value) if all your doing is trading for dead picks IMO. Use the picks to move up and get a player or two who are going to make our team. I don't see the sense in trading for lower picks in a draft that is supposed to be talent poor.

You're confusing the number of picks--which is different between the two teams--with the strategy which to relates to how to use the picks you have--which is similar between the two teams.

What's different is that the Pats picks are higher, so their fans already know what they've got to work with. That means the odds of them having a better draft are better, since they were picking from a bigger pool that contained more talent, but it doesn't mean they, or anyone for that matter, is necessarily going to end up having improved their team more than we will.
