Todd Archer of ESPN writes that Cowboys CB Brandon Carr is the “big winner” after the team was unable to sign either Nolan Carroll or Patrick Robinson after bringing them in for visits.

According to Archer, Dallas will wants Carr to take a pay cut and agree to reduce his $9.1 million salary for the 2016, and have spoken to his agent. However, determining his worth has been a bit of an issue.

Archer mentions that Carr could end up in the $5 – $6 million per year range if he were to be available on the open market. Beyond that, the Cowboys are well aware that some team would sign him to a contract, which explains why they didn’t make this move last year.

Another issue is that they currently do not have an obvious replacement for him on their roster.

In today's market $9 million isn't a big price tag for a starting CB.

I think fans under rate his abilities as well. Dallas was 5th in yards passing per game last season, with next to no pass rush. He isn't a super start but he is a solid starter.

I might not be as knowledgeable as some but I've been a fan of this team for more than 50 years and I say they can do no worse by letting him go.

Let's see what his leverage will be if this guy falls

Might be higher if he and jones start at safety and give Carr much better confidence to play his man.

Just playing devil's advocate

Some of you guys have clearly forgotten what actual "putrid" CB play looks like. You guys don't remember Jacques Reeves or Alan Ball?

They really don't. Carr makes some really frustrating mistakes and doesn't make the splash plays to compensate... That's what everyone is seeing. Then throw in the dollars he and he seems terrible.

But fact of the matter is, he's not useless and we don't have leverage.

Carr is actually 10th in the league average (salary-total contract)for CBs. He isn't close to being the 10th best cb in the league.

Present him with a new deal that pays him $5.5 million in salary for each of the remaining years on his contract with half of it being guaranteed and include incentive pay based on number of interceptions and/or forced fumbles that would allow him to earn the rest of his current contract. If he can start creating turnovers, he will be worth every penny. If he won't sign it on the spot, make him a June 1 cut and plan on drafting an extra CB and scanning the waiver wire for a late veteran addition after final cuts are made. Problem solved.

It's the last year of his contract. So to do that they would have to add years.

like every other DB in Dallas, this dude would come to Dallas and become a terrible player. Rod, Charles and Darren Woodson could come in their prime to the current Dallas Cowboys and would become terrible players.

Byron was not terrible. He reminds me a lot of Darren, just not as big.
