But none of this was due to Dak.

Most of our 1st and goal issues were due to Dak. People can blame anyone they want, but Dak does not make those throws. Most of the times he doesn't even attempt them and takes the sack. Push him back to the 15-20 yard line and he'll make the throws. Hopefully this season he improves on that.

Is anyone really surprised?

Linehan isn't with the Cowboys any more for a reason.

I think having Frederick back will help.
It’s not going to help unless they get some imagination on offense and I can’t see that happening as long as Garrett is the coach. Remember Linehan for all his faults was running Garrett’s offense. This isn’t about to change with Kellen Moore.

We're fixing to find out if that is true.

Funny how Linehan didn't have these troubles with most of his other quarterbacks. Just the sucky ones.

LOL....Yea it is funny how you apparently pulled this out the air. You may wanna research this a bit...

NFL coaching career[edit]
Linehan took his first NFL job as the offensive coordinator/ wide receivers coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2002. After three seasons in Minneapolis, Linehan served in a similar capacity with the Miami Dolphins in 2005 under Nick Saban, then was hired as head coach by the St. Louis Rams on January 19, 2006.[18]

Linehan inherited a team in transition. Most of the Rams' stars from earlier in the decade had gone elsewhere, and those who were still there had noticeably lost a step. Nonetheless, Linehan's tenure started out on a promising note, as the Rams went 4–2 in their first six games. However, a four-game losing streak in October and November effectively ended any chance of making the playoffs. Despite this slump, the NFC West was so weak that year that while they finished 8–8, missing the division title by a single game. However, the Rams regressed to 3–13 in his second season. Years of questionable draft and free-agent acquisitions caught up with the team, and the season degenerated into a fiasco due to a rash of injuries to the offensive line. The season was also marked by disputes with star players such as Steven Jackson, Torry Holt, and, most notoriously, quarterback Marc Bulger. Holt and Jackson openly feuded with Linehan on the sidelines during games. The easygoing Linehan didn't discipline them, leading to criticism that he wasn't willing to assert his authority.

The bottom fell out in 2008. After an 0–3 start in which the Rams were outscored 116–29, a significant departure from the days of "The Greatest Show on Turf", Linehan benched Bulger in favor of Trent Green for their game against the Buffalo Bills. The move did not work; the Rams lost 35–14 after allowing 25 unanswered points in the second half. Linehan was fired hours later, tallying an 11–25 record in his 36 games as head coach.

On January 9, 2009, Linehan interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers as a candidate for the open offensive coordinator position.

Linehan was announced as the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions on January 23, 2009, by new head coach Jim Schwartz.[4] On December 30, 2013, Linehan was relieved of his duties as the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator following the firing of Lions head coach Jim Schwartz.

Good enough to earn a big payday but not good enough to earn a ring. That doesn't sound like it's on the player, but more on management. Player evaluations, coaching, and contracts.

Dang. I didnt know that. How long has Stafford been in the league? Stafford has been pegged as one of the" just under great," good QB's in this league.

Not a surprise. Quarterbacks need a team around them and a team needs good coaching. In my lifetime the Lions have never had a dominating team. Usually the underdog when they reached the playoffs. Last decent team they had was in 2014. You'd have to go back to 1991 before that.

We had the NFL rushing champion with 1434 yards. Not the issue.

The play calling was the issue. Yeah, it was fine three years ago. It’s not three years ago. Teams watch the film and catch on to you. Then eventually they start to call out your plays.

The bottom line is they shut our run game down regardless how they did it. That coupled with the fact that the Rams ran all over our defense resulted in an L.

it was not really good. it was good. no playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. It's bad when you praise guys for having a bunch of tackles past the line of scrimmage lol.

It was a Top 10 defense last year. Their real drawback was producing turnovers, but overall the defense had a really good year. It just ended very poorly.

He was fine. The defense was ****.
Sod!
Excuses are plenty!
I have been hearing these excuses for 23 years. Lady Di was shopping madly in Paris and Jerry was embarking on post-Jimmy success!
Ah, lad. The mists of history, all good mammaries of when we mattered.

I'd like to know how many penalties we had in the red zone. We had to be close to leading in that category.

Right so what’s the point of paying Dak when our offense is predicated on running the ball. Heaven forbid our QB step up and carry us in playoff game.

Teams that give up 273 rushing yards, only win the game 4% of the time.

4%.

Which means almost no QB can carry their team to a win when their defense plays as bad as the Cowboys did vs the Rams.

It was an almost impossible game for the offense to win

Possibly. Be interesting to see his red zone performance under an OC who is smarter than a wounded rabbit. I sure hope Moore is that guy!!!!

it'll be interesting, but IMO players make coaches, more than coaches make players

red zone 2018 ... Mahomes' 36% TD rate on 97 ATTs, Luck 35% on 89 ATTs, Brady 21% of 86 ATTs, Goff 22% of 86

Dak's red zone TD rate was off last year (with new starters at C, LG, FB, XWR, YWR, and TE and a new play caller)

2018 - 18% of 67, Dak has a lot of room to improve
2017 - 25% of 57
2016 - 28% of 50

it's Zeke's red zone numbers that most concern me, from inside the 10:
in 2016 24 carries and 10 TDs (42% TD rate), that's called a great OL
in 2018 22 carries and 3 TDs (13% TD rate), that's called a busted OL, massive drops offs in talent at C, LG, and TE

Note, if our next starting LG can block ... Moore looks like a genius with just common sense play calling

Was losing Fredbeard that big of a difference? Has Tyron Smith really fallen off the edge?

Or did opposing defenses figure out that the Cowboys would run on first, run on second, and throw on third? You can’t call the same plays in 2016 that you called in 2018. Not how the NFL works.

From the articles:

Very few will go on the record, but off-record sources all point to the team’s stubborn nature. Their philosophy amounted to pounding Zeke behind a line that wasn’t holding up well and into the face of obvious run blitzes, then turning to the passing game when it was 3rd and long and their plan was telegraphed to the defense. It’s easy to see why they came up short.”

It’s not an excuse when it’s factual. Maybe you should rewatch the game and actually see the Rams running all over our *****.

There are two really fantastic articles from Bob Sturm in the Athletic that you must read. Links are at the bottom of the post, but here is the summary:

Almost nobody (29th) was more inefficient at scoring touchdowns in the red zone than the Dallas Cowboys.” Only the Jets, Jags and 49ers were worse!

And here’s the kicker - they were actually 30th once they got Amari Cooper! They scored touchdowns 52% of the time; league average was 76%.

“No team (32nd) was more inefficient at scoring touchdowns after a first-and-goal than the Dallas Cowboys”

And this one, which blew my mind, and what got Linehan fired, this offense was better at scoring from midfield than it was at scoring from the eight-yard line!

Yeah, we knew it was bad - but did you know it was that bad? Yet this team still ended the season 7-1.

Imagine what this team will be if Kellen Moore can fix the red zone offense?

Edit: Looks like Athletic links are blocked here? You can Google on them and find them.
I knew it was bad because it was the most boring offense I ever saw especially during the first half of the season. Just painful to watch.

Receivers aren't wide open in the red zone, and dinks into the flat don't work.

Hence the problem.
But...but...but...Dak runs so well in the red zone! To quote an old TO. phrase...whine, whine, sniffle, cry....”He’s my QB!” And the homers will continue in his defense.
