The arm talent is there...
Strong arm, super quick release, not hesitant to let go of the ball, and can anticipate timing of WR routes. Really he is an excellent QB project, but he is still a project.

His quick release and fast ball style passing make him incredible to watch on WR screens because he gets the ball out quicker than the defense can process what's going on. He can also throw the ball further than any receiver can run, but his deep ball accuracy can be alarmingly bad at times. His problem is learning to control his arm strength and adding some touch, which he does on occasion. Other times he drills the ball unnecessarily.

If he learns patience and control, he'll be a pretty good one.

I would take him in the 2nd round... Not sure if he's a 1st round prospect. Keep in mind he's already 24.

I've generally ignored him because he's older, looks like a hillbilly and Baylor's offense is a lot of short passes. Looking at him more on draft breakdown--since we're clearly interested in him--the ball definitely jumps out of his hand. Generally able to keep his eyes downfield and keep plays alive. Pressure doesn't get to him like Hundley. Even though Baylor's offense is mostly a pre-determined read, he does occasionally scan the field.

Only thing i disliked was downfield accuracy can be good or alarmingly awful. Like, Ricky 'Wild Thing' Vaughn of Major League awful. Maybe suggests he's capable of good throws and his form just gets sloppy. Ultimately though, I get more of a Gary Hogeboom vibe than a future legit QB vibe.

I wonder if Garrett's approach will be to throw numbers at replacing Romo, like with Jimmy drafting Aikman and then Walsh? A 2nd or 3rd rounder this year. Draft another next year. Rather than put all our eggs in one QB basket, let competition decide and hopefully we're able to flip the other one for a pick.

I dont think he has leap frogged Hundley. He could have, Petty has been rising and Hundley dropping but Hundley still seems to be the #3.

If Hundley can sneak into the 1st round I think that pushes the 4th QB into the 2nd round, if he wasn't there already.

Practice facility that collapsed a few years ago. She was among the injured. Not sure if the Cowboys are a defendant though. She's definitely suing the builders.

Ah. Didn't realize she was involved in that, or that the suits were still ongoing.

Hundley is a huge wildcard IMO. One of those guys I have no feel for where could go. His physical talent and character could have a team in the mid to late first looking at him. But his absolute lack of pocket presense could push him below Petty and maybe even Grayson.

His bust potential is very big IMO

Hundley could either be Kaep at his best or Kaep at his worst IMO. Accuracy and decision making questionable.

I think his best bet would be the Eagles. He could do a lot of things in that offense and would be a nightmare to deal with.

I hope we don't take him in the second and I don't think he will be there for us in the third.

So...I hope some other team takes him in the second before garrett and wade decide to use our second on him.

The only caveat might be if we somehow trade down and have more than one second round pick...even if that happens I would rather use it on another player.

That is the only way I see the Cowboys taking a QB before the late rounds.

Pass on this guy. Another college spread QB doomed to failure? Has there been any college spread QBs become successful in the NFL? Pistol QBs excluded.
Maybe in the 5th if he is still available.
Bryce Petty, Baylor
Measurables:
6-3, 230, 4.87
Stats: 62 TDs and 10 interceptions the past two years.
Scouts Say: "He's not the guy you looking for, at least we aren't.'' ..."It looks like he just locks in one receiver every play. I'm not sure how good he is reading a defense.'' ..."He gets rid of the ball quickly, which is good. But there's not much else I like.'' ..."He had some really good players around him, which made him look a little better than he is.''

If this is the QB that Dallas is sold on to be Romo's replacement, I have no problem with them using a second. I don't remember Dallas showing this much interest in a QB or investing the time that they have on Petty. Sure, they could use the pick to fill other positions, but at some point they will have to draft Romo's replacement within the next couple of years. They might as well get the QB that they really want before they are put in a position where they are drafting QBs out of desperation to find a starter. Petty could be a bust, but that is possible with any draft pick.

I'm no fan of Petty but these scouting blurbs sound like the scouts do almost no work on these evaluations. I'm going to assume they work for the Commanders. Reminds me of the old school scouts in Moneyball.

"It looks like he just locks in one receiver every play. I'm not sure how good he is reading a defense.''
Gee scouts, if only there were a way of confirming this...like, showing him film and having him diagnose what he sees. Because of the offense he runs, it's impossible to look at his game film and say if he can or can't read defenses. But not having to do it is not the same as not being able to do it.

"He gets rid of the ball quickly, which is good. But there's not much else I like.''
C'mon scout...not much else. He's got a nice arm. Nice size. Some mobility. Some pocket presence. Doesn't fall apart when there's pressure or when a play breaks down. Good leader and communicator. Makes good decisions. It's just completely ridiculous for a scout to say the only thing Petty has going for him is a quick release.

"He had some really good players around him, which made him look a little better than he is.''
Really good players around him at Baylor? There are a couple, but nothing like Oregon or Florida St. Do Winston and Mariota get this same criticism? And why would a good WR make it more difficult to scout a QB than a bad WR? Seems like this is only an issue if the scout is just looking at stats. And why would a scout be unable to assess the QB's accuracy, timing, arm strength, velocity, etc., if there are good players around him?

It's like they didn't even bother because of the offense Baylor runs.
