Pass on this guy. Another college spread QB doomed to failure? Has there been any college spread QBs become successful in the NFL? Pistol QBs excluded.
Maybe in the 5th if he is still available.
Bryce Petty, Baylor
Measurables: 6-3, 230, 4.87
Stats: 62 TDs and 10 interceptions the past two years.
Scouts Say: "He's not the guy you looking for, at least we aren't.'' ..."It looks like he just locks in one receiver every play. I'm not sure how good he is reading a defense.'' ..."He gets rid of the ball quickly, which is good. But there's not much else I like.'' ..."He had some really good players around him, which made him look a little better than he is.''

I'm no fan of Petty but these scouting blurbs sound like the scouts do almost no work on these evaluations. I'm going to assume they work for the Commanders. Reminds me of the old school scouts in Moneyball.
"It looks like he just locks in one receiver every play. I'm not sure how good he is reading a defense.''
Gee scouts, if only there were a way of confirming this...like, showing him film and having him diagnose what he sees. Because of the offense he runs, it's impossible to look at his game film and say if he can or can't read defenses. But not having to do it is not the same as not being able to do it.
"He gets rid of the ball quickly, which is good. But there's not much else I like.''
C'mon scout...not much else. He's got a nice arm. Nice size. Some mobility. Some pocket presence. Doesn't fall apart when there's pressure or when a play breaks down. Good leader and communicator. Makes good decisions. It's just completely ridiculous for a scout to say the only thing Petty has going for him is a quick release.
"He had some really good players around him, which made him look a little better than he is.''
Really good players around him at Baylor? There are a couple, but nothing like Oregon or Florida St. Do Winston and Mariota get this same criticism? And why would a good WR make it more difficult to scout a QB than a bad WR? Seems like this is only an issue if the scout is just looking at stats. And why would a scout be unable to assess the QB's accuracy, timing, arm strength, velocity, etc., if there are good players around him?
It's like they didn't even bother because of the offense Baylor runs.
