Mike Fisher tweeted:

The lone puff of white smoke from VRanch: 'There isn't a lot of talking going on with Romo right now,' #Cowboys source tells me
12:53pm - 12 Mar 13

Spencer Stuff: 2) #Cowboys prepared to talk abt ways to cut his cap impact to 1/2 of that. $5M of room sure would help ...
1:27pm - 12 Mar 13

It seems that Romo deal is not happening any time soon, if at all. The team will focus on Spencer to create a little space to make minor additions.

Cowboys signed franchise player Anthony Spencer to a one-year, $10.627 million contract.

The move guarantees Spencer's salary. Although there had been noise about the Cowboys shopping a player that will move from defensive end to outside linebacker in new DC Monte Kiffin's 4-3, it's not a realistic possibility. The sides now have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement. Considering owner Jerry Jones' affinity for his own players, we wouldn't rule out a lengthy deal.

While I think there's a very real chance that Romo doesn't want to resign, this is a bit silly. With how much he'd be getting, I'd expect him to be the last one worked with.

Ill say this much, if Romo isn't extended and is allowed to test free agency next offseason the romo era is done in Dallas. Some team will pay him what we can't.

Might be fan ignorance on my part but, I would assume that Romo and the team both would want to get the deal done because of the importance of the cap implications. If he wants the OL fixed and a better product he sure could help his own cause by working out a deal.

Well yeah. If he goes to the open market it would likely mean he doesn't want to be back and the team is fine with him leaving.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would extend Romo either. Just my personal opinion, but I don't think he's going to have 4 more years in him.

And I think we're going to have a new head coach next year anyways, so let him start fresh with a new QB.

I doubt him working out a deal will change what the do as far as the OL in FA much. My guess is at least 2 OL drafted in the 1st 4 rounds, if not 1st 3. That would be my guess as to how they plan on fixing the line.

Spencer is priority right now... very interesting indeed.
Or his one year contract is faster to work out...

We're not a championship caliber team.

I'm sorry, we just are not and the teams that are just keep getting distantly better.

If I could get a 1st, 2nd this year and a 3rd next year for #9 I would do it.

I think he's a top 5 QB if you give him an o-line and a heck of a game plan.

But we're not going to win a SB in the next 2 years like this. There's too many better teams.

You want to give me the same for the future HOF'er and a guy I believe still has 2, 15+ sack years in Ware and I will. Especially if I know Romo is not here.

Then we can make a legitimate run in the next 2-3 years with all those high picks.

We draft our QB next year and let Orton play. Call it what it is. This is not panick, this is understanding we have a new core in Dez Bryant, Sean Lee, Tyron Smith, Mo Claiborne and Brandon Carr.

This is understanding that if we get rid of our last bad contracts and get picks to build properly through the draft by leveraging our aging studs that deserve a chance to win somewhere we can add the components to the rest of those budding stars.

Unless we can somehow fix the trenches, especially o-line and get a safety that can come in here day 1 and play high end football I don't see how we can make a run at the title.

Now looking at our cap space, we can't get that fair value RT like Winston so we can draft 1 of the 2 stud guards and fix this line. We can't afford a Kenny Phillips who we could draft a very solid safety in round 3 to back up if/when he gets hurt.

Theyre going to let the market decide what Spencer should get paid, well didn't work last year and despite this buyers market we're supposed to be seeing, expect Cliff Avril to get paid and Spencer is the better player.

Bottom line is, whatever we save cap wise in nailing a contract with Spencer will probably be just enough to sign this years group of draft picks.

I look at next years pay roll and the year after that and it's already more than this years and that's without Romo extended. Not to mention the key players that we'll need to keep.

This is an absolute cluster off you know what. Nevermind opinion, check the numbers while Jerry parades like we have a shot at a title because he honestly believes we do. I wish we did, but we don't. Sorry.

Or Romo negotiations haven't really started yet in earnest. JJT said as much in the chat session on ESPN earlier today.

Supposedly the 3 phony years at the end of this contract make it so he can't really be franchised because the cap hit would be ludicrous.

Saw that too, I think DE and OLB were just used backwards.

If he bedcomes a FA, it's because he no longer wants to be a Cowboy.

Trade Romo while he has value and get a 1st, 2nd, and maybe 3rd for him. Some QB desperate team will pay a lot for him. Then use those picks to build this team's lines up. Yea we'll suck for one year but then we'll have a top pick in next year's draft. Then draft a QB first next year. Bridgewater, Manziel, and Tajh Boyd will most likely be available, among others. Let's not prolong this run of mediocrity anymore. Start over, and we'll be really good in 2-3 years. Probably contending for a championship in 3-4.

Amiright?

If by next year, they are in a similar cap state, I think they might find it hard to franchise him as his number would be bigger as a QB than a LB.

We have more on next years books without Romo's salary included than this year's books with Romo's salary included.

Top 5 QB $ is currently $16-$20 million a year.

Ware will also count $15 and $16 million against the cap in the next 2 years.

We have 2 options. Win now, like this year or blow this thing up and build around the new core by getting what you can for your aging studs right now.

The front office will not inform us of really how deep in it we are. They want us to believe we have a shot every year all the way till game 16.

Where's Stephen Jones chickling about how much flexibility we have now?

All I hear is how Jerry thinks this o-line is sufficient and how Kyle Wilbur has the best chance of starting at SLB.

Wow! Suddenly we draft starters in almost every round.

No, it's because we have no choice and franchising Romo next year really is not a choice we have either.
