What we have more on the books for next without Romo's salary included than this year with Romo's salary being on it.

Top 5 QB $ is currently $16-$20 million a year.
Plus, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the Cowboys would also be hit with all that money that was put on the 3 phony years. Franchising him is not a viable option.

I wonder if the Cowboys could give him a new contract first, then immediatly trade him. That way, any team that forks over the 1st(s) would have him locked up for 5-6 years.

I would definitely want a future 1st round for Romo. Nobody in the first round this year is that great and going to push their team to a championship. Plenty of elite prospects in 2014 though

Ill say this much, if Romo isn't extended and is allowed to test free agency next offseason the romo era is done in Dallas. Some team will pay him what we can't.

Yup, and I seriously hope some other team does pay for him. I would love to move on from the Romo era.

For what for a guy who can bail the very next season?

You got a point but usually the player is traded to a team that knows what he wants and will give him very close, if not the whole amount anyways before the trade happens.

Because he is a top 10 QB and still should have 2-3 very good seasons in him he is still marketable.

A team like Arizona or the Bills would not be interested in him? How about the Browns? Now the problem with those teams is he probably would not want to go there and force us to let him leave so he could choose the suitor that would pay him.

That's where this is difficult. Only time we get leverage is when the guy has legitimate compeition that can threaten his starting job, leave him on the bench where he is no longer this marketable FA. That's when he pushes for the trade.

It's nasty but that's football/business and his side is clearly utilizing all their leverage as they should.

Agreed. Trade him for a #1 & #2 to try and get this team out of the dark ages.

You assume that just because you get a couple of high picks that it means we move on OUT of the dark ages and not further into it by drafting the wrong players.

That is a big assumption for anyone to make.

we could, but any sigining bonus we just gave him on that contract will hit the cap immediately. so, not feasible.

Reworking Spencer before Romo gives Jerry a little leverage.

Remember, there are a bunch of high-end QBs entering the last year of their contracts.
Ryan, Stafford, Romo to name three.

I think either two or all three of them have the same agency.
This is all linked and there really is no huge rush.

Some would say we should be happy Jerry doesn't have too much cap room at the very beginning of free agency--or sucker's time--or he may do something we regret in a year or two.:)

The team should be working on getting a 2nd for Spencer because we would have gotten a 3rd round compensatory pick if he left anyways.

Should be working on trading Romo and Ware.

Witten is gonna have to go down with this ship and he will.

Now that he was re-structured we can't cut Ratliff either.

Wonder if Spears was re-structured cause theres a guy we can cut to save a $2-$3 million.

Might be fan ignorance on my part but, I would assume that Romo and the team both would want to get the deal done because of the importance of the cap implications. If he wants the OL fixed and a better product he sure could help his own cause by working out a deal.

It's Romo's last big contract. If it goes anything like it did with Drew Brees Romo will hold out for every possible dime irregardless of the impact on the team. It's Romo's last big contract and there is a very good chance he want's to maximize it.

I would never draft a QB in this terrible class. 2014 will be a different story...

I agree that the start of FA is suckerfest.

However I am more concerned about our future and how far we are from the real contenders in this league to continue this charade.

I do find it interesting that they're willing to negotiate with spencer right now and not making tony top priority.....

You're right if we draft the wrong players and the hardest one to find will be the franchise QB.

But if Orton is starting you better believe we go anywhere from 3-13 to 6-10, especially if Ware also gets moved after Romo.

Now you're picking top 5 and have a legitimate shot at one next season.

Not to mention the plethora of high round picks accumulated to re-build quickly.

Seattle and San Fran look good but St. Louis did well with their bounty of picks that they still have from the Commanders. That team is already where we are and they have their franchise QB.

We are not ready to win a title and will be in no better position to do so next season.

It's better than overpaying yet another player for years to come thus sealing our fate in mediocrity. Romo showed against the Commanders that he doesn't have what it takes to lead.

I would like to start building this team up from the inside out. Much like the 49'ers have done. So what, we have a bad year or 2 in the rebuilding phase, it's better than kidding ourselves thinking we are a player or 2 away from going all the way.

The reason we have been stuck in mediocrity is Jerry holding on to players for way too long.
