The Cowboys were the only team to finish in the bottom ten in Defensive Passer Rating from 2010-2013, and only two teams had 3 years where they did it. It's truly remarkable how this team hasn't been able to field an even average defense to get into the playoffs.

Bottom-Ten Defensive Passer Rating Finishes
Cowboys (4)
-------------------------
Commanders (3)
Vikings (3)
-------------------------
Texans (2)
Rams (2)
Chargers (2)
Jaguars (2)
Raiders (2)
Panthers (2)
Lions (2)
Bucs (2)
Bills (2)
Broncos (2)
Colts (2)
-------------------------
Packers (1)
Falcons (1)
Titans (1)
Saints (1)
Eagles (1)
Chiefs (1)
Seahawks (1)
49ers (1)

to put it into perspective the last 4 years i think we have been around 92-96 defensive qb rating and the average defensive qb rating of superbowl champs since 2000 is 70. the highest defensive qb rating for sb champ since 2000 is giants with 83 and 86 and every other superbowl champ since 2000 is 80 or less.. seahawks this year is 63

We were especially bad this season and Brandon Carr has a big share of the blame. I've never seen anyone abused like he was all season. I would strongly consider dumping him in the offseason.

In the past 4 years this team has drafted one defensive lineman. Oh wait, we drafted that guy in the 7th round in 2010 and traded him last year. So make that two defensive linemen. Are we really surprised the pass D is as bad as its been? Coupled with the fact this team cant hit on corners to save their life

One thing Jerry has not done is neglect the corner position. Carr, Claiborne and Scandrick have all come at big costs. He's neglected the front 4 which kills the back 4.

Sarcasm if your best friend. :)

Until we can defend better, particularly against the pass, we will be stuck in neutral

And yet, this thread will get little traction for some bizarre reason.

Many posters supported sinking tons of resources into the CB position as an answer for the problem. The results have been less than impressive. I don't think many posters want to be reminded that the investment was a dumb decision, so this thread will die a quick death. Risen Star was mocked for disagreeing with the CB investment. Seems like he was right.

And for about the 7th season in a row, the team has ranked better when it came to sacks that just about any of the important pass defense ratings.

Yeah, the defensive line needs help, but the fact remains, what's been behind the front 3 or 4 has been worse than the front 3 or 4... Year after year after year.

This is what happens when you (1) try to fit the personnel to your scheme rather than the scheme to the personnel, and (2) don't draft talent on the defensive line. You can spend all the money on CBs in the world but it won't buy you success if you don't let them play to their strengths and you don't give them help up front.

Do you know what defense the team plays? Its called a zone. In a cover 2 zone the safety is supposed to have the area behind the Cb and the Lber on his side is supposed to have the middle. This defense is designed to funnel everything inside. Think about that for a second. Carr is playing zone, and to the inside of him theres been player like Sims and wilber for most of the season, and then theres been Lawrence too. All on Carrs side. You dont think theres a reason why these teams run picks on inside routes consistently on Carr's side? Ever think that they know whos playing Lber and who is playing Safety on Carrs side? Sims, wilber, Lawrence the majority of the season, and heath deep. Playing man on his side is called an island, but playing zone on his side is playing a whole continent by himself with these players misreads and inability to cover their area. Thats why you hear Carr talk about the schem is bad. He isnt complaining, he knows its a bad fit for the people they had playing.

It's not about the CBs. The coverage problems relate mostly to DL pressure, but there have been problems with coverage from the Will, Mike (with Lee out) and we still have significant coverage issues at Safety.

Risen was mocked because he believes CBs are unimportant, which is a silly thing to believe.
