Cowboys WR A.J. Jenkins: ‘I have to prove to myself I can do it’

Receiver A.J. Jenkins remains on the outside looking in when it comes to a roster spot.

But the former first round pick has come on strong leading up to the Cowboys preseason game with Minnesota.

“I’m just working hard, just grinding,’’ Jenkins said. “Every day is a new day.

“I’ve had some ups and some downs. I just have to keep going.’’

Jenkins didn’t do much to distinguish himself in the early days of training camp. But he caught two passes for 40 yards in the loss to San Francisco and came back with three outstanding practices to finish camp.

If he somehow made the roster and they got Ogletree production out him, probably the most you could ask. Think Lucky very iffy right now.

Draft Analysis:
Mayock's take: "Had a big senior season. Had him rated as my eighth wide receiver and a second-round pick. He's a vertical threat who gets in and out of his breaks smoothly. This is a good football player."

Things clearly have not gone as Jenkins would have hoped but based on the last week or so it looks like the light may be coming on for Jenkins.

I think his chance to make the roster is all but crushed by the fact that he's not a KR/PR. Whitehead has his issues but he fits a need much more then Jenkins does. I could see us going without either honestly.

Almost feel like he could have a bigger year than Street, but I doubt Street will move down the depth chart.

There's no doubt that Jenkins has some talent that needs to be maximized to his and the team's advantage.

It also appears that he's a man on a mission to find a place for himself in this league and possibly this team.

Maybe there's a golden opportunity for him to do so but he'll surely have to show up big in the next 2 games.

Guys like that know what it's like to struggle for their big chance, so he won't be taking anything for granted.

I'm developing a liking for what I'm seeing in him -- perhaps it's simply in my nature to pull for the underdog.

IF he doesn't make this roster and plays well in the final two preseason games,, I suspect Green Bays wlll pick him up in a heartbeat

No doubt GB will be scrutinizing the cuts.

This would be good week to put together a trade involving Hanna or Escobar.

If he doesn't play special teams, I doubt he'll find a home here or anywhere.

I'd be thrilled to get something for Escobar, Swaim has looked great so far.

Starting to wonder about my attachment to Escobar since all you guys seem ready to trade him. He looks ready to break out for us the way Beasley did last season, and I just can't fathom wanting to get rid of him. Trading Hanna, I could see since he's closer to FA and has less physical upside, but Escobar looks like a mismatch player in the making from where I'm sitting. He just doesn't get the balls because there aren't enough to go around.

Escobar has too much talent to dump. The only way I even consider trading him is if the value clearly favors the Cowboys. I'm not dumping him for a 5th or 6th Rd pick. He is Wittens replacement and should get some more snaps and targets even at Wittens expense. Bigger, faster mismatch waiting to happen.

It could work out nice for the Cowboys in the end. Escobar can resign and take over for Witten shortly while the Cowboys get a cheap deal since he hasn't showcased himself to the league. I'm higher than most on him, but I think the kid has top 5-10 TE talent. Witten is punching father time in the nads right now and preventing him from showing it.

I don't see Escobar as a fit for us, he is strictly a receiver and in the right offense, like how the Colts use their TEs as WRs, he would be highly productive. Sitting behind Witten and being recused for not being able to block means we get very little value from him. I say let him go and see if we can get at least some type of compensation for him. Meantime I think Hanna and Swaim are going to be fine receiving.

I have this same thing about Dunbar, because they talk all the time about how great he is and then never use him. You know what? I don't care if Dunbar is Sproles,B. Westrook and Dave Meggett all rolled into one, he is doing nothing here, let him go.

I've always wondered this about Jenkins back but what are his strengths? His hands? His speed? Agility? Quickness? Nothing really stands out to me but I didn't get to watch him in college.

Didn't see anything I didn't like there but then, highlights always look good. Here's the thing, though -- he'll be obliged to make up for a very lackluster start with Dallas if he's to make the roster. The next two weeks should be huge in determining his chances to stay. Even then, there will likely be a tough decision ahead. The fact that the starting WRs will be used sparingly may very well help his cause, however. We'll see.

Jenkins did some kick returning in college but no punt returning. I think Whitehead as an edge but still has to go out and earn the spot.

Well, Street did prove to an effective gunner.
Oh...wait....
