Cowboys receivers Sam Hurd and Miles Austin are "significantly ahead" of Isaiah Stanback in the battle to be in the regular receiving rotation.

As the Dallas Morning News says, they're simply more polished and prepared. Stanback is raw and his value is more long-term, but the former quarterback is the biggest playmaker of the group and the most dangerous with the ball in his hands. He's obviously more of a dynasty prospect at this point.

I've never seen him produce at an NFL level to deserve the hype anyway. Same reason I dont understand why folks on here are making Felix out to be the next Marshall Faulk when he only averaged one reception a game his last year in college.

Thought we were talking about Stanback, How did Felix Jones come up?
It's too Bad, he lost out on his first year, but the kid appears to have some serious talent, let's see how it plays out. I know I'm pulling for him, The jury is still out on Miles, until he proves he can consistantly catch the ball. So the postion ranking hasn't been settled yet.

I wasn't expecting Stanbach to be up with Hurd and Austin. He had injury issues last year that slowed his progress, he is learning a new position and it is only his second year. WR is a position that takes a little time to learn even for the guys who played the position in college so it is no surprise that he is behind the curve.

This is not to say that he won't be better than both of the other guys when he finally "gets it" but for now he is where I expected him to be and that is behind them. By the end of this year I expect to see him making progress and maybe getting some playing time. Next year I expect to see him make a major breakthrough where his skills at the position will start to catch up with his natural abilities.

Since we don't need Stanbach to produce this year other than in spot situations, can we let the kid get used to the pro game and let Hurd and Austin get some first team snaps to see if one or a combination of Hurd/Austin/Stanbach can replace Glenn in some fashion? We still have TO, Witten and Crayton so I am not too worried that one of these guys has to step up and turn into Terry Glenn tomorrow.

I don't want to hear that BS any QB at the D1 level can throw the ball to the flats or any other route a RB runs. There's reason why FJ didn't get thrown to whether you want to accepet that fact or not is on you.

It's already been said before that Hurd & Austin should be ahead since they entering their 3rd season; in fact it's make or break for both of them. Fortunately in the OTAs & minicamp both have shown a lot of improvement which hopefully we all will get to see/hear about during TC & in upcoming preseason games. With the release of Glenn, we definitely need at least Austin to step it up. He's the only 1 of the two whose got the legit speed & size to challenge our opponents not to overlook him when planning on how to handle TO.

Apparently Stanbach has at least already shown to the coaching staff & probably to Romo that he's the biggest playmaker of the group and the most dangerous with the ball in his hands. Actually I read late yesterday in one of the media reports that the Cowboys/Garrett will be designing plays to take advantage of what he can already do. Understand he's great at crossing routes (when the ball's in front of him?) but still gets lost when having to run down the field & look back for the ball so he can figure out where it's at.

Will be real interesting to watch the development of all 3 of these players. Either one or all 3 of them need to step up to some degree so their combined efforts gives us some good yardage and some nice TD catches.

BTW: Did anyone notice that Bennett was catching quite a few passes yesterday & he's splitting #2 job with Curtis. I know someone posted that he still looked a little slow but apparently he was limping a little but might also still be thinking about what he's supposed to do. We'll see where we are at with all 3 WRs, with Bennett as well as Felix Jones in a few weeks.

So two guys who played roles in our offense -- one of them as the #3 WR -- are ahead of the red shirted 2nd year player making a transition from QB.

Wow, Stanback must really be a bust if he is behind those two

as stated previously, not surprizing.

what i'd like to hear is if the coaching staff is happy with his "work" at the postition........is he putting in film time, hitting up TO for tips, ideas, does he ask Bartell to stay after practice and throw another 50 balls....does he show up early to have an assis. coach throw work with him on routes, playbook etc

You mean in his ONE YEAR at the NFL level (in which he was red-shirted)?

Young WR Report: Can Isaiah Stanback add a dimension?

8:51 PM Sat, Jul 26, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Ex-undrafted free agents Sam Hurd and Miles Austin had solid if not spectacular practices today. Danny Amendola, who watched seven rounds without hearing his name called this spring, continued to claim the role of training camp darling.

But the play by a young WR that most opened my eyes today was a reverse by Isaiah Stanback, the lone draft pick of the bunch. Stanback, a 2007 fourth-rounder still making the transition from college QB, showed excellent acceleration when he turned the corner.

I recall Jerry chatting with reporters last August, predicting that Stanback would "light up" some defenses on those sort of plays. We never saw that last season, when Stanback struggled with injuries and essentially redshirted. Maybe we will this season.

Hurd and Austin are significantly ahead of Stanback in the battle to be in the regular receiving rotation. They're simply more polished and prepared.

However, Stanback is the most dangerous of the bunch with the ball in his hands. Austin has great speed, but he isn't as elusive as Stanback. Don't be surprised if Jason Garrett comes up with a package of plays that put Stanback in position to show his ability to accelerate and make people miss.
