Don't you guys get tired of attacking media like they're villains? Does it ever feel childish to any of you?
It is called "convenience," a quick aside to a monolithic industry upon which we can blame a lot of things.
Often we blame the media for an assortment of ills, as if the media are plotting every day to spread misinformation and somehow making this country soft, introducing PC horrors and helping our enemies abroad.
What many here and elsewhere rarely consider is that the "media," as opposed to the news media, is a broad grouping of entities: the ad industry, Facebook, Hollywood, even the music industry.
What some here mean when they berate the "media" is the "news media."
Some whipping boys throughout history:
*Sorcery. My crops would be good if it were not for black magic put upon thou by the other farmers.
*The Devil. All the world's ills are because of the devil.
*Foreigners. The British Tories ruined this country. Then the Irish. Then the Germans, then the Jews, then the
Poles, Gypsies, blacks, Mexicans, Middle Easterners, and soon the Syrians.
*Roosevelt. He introduced socialism, giving the poor, veterans and the elderly a free ride with benefits.
*Obama. A homeowner discovers termites. "I blame! Obama," the angry homeowner says. Aunt Olga has the flu. "I blame Obama."
*The Kardasians. (This group of hussies and louts actually can be blamed for many of the country's ills. It's a proven fact.)
So, in conclusion, "the media" is a catch-all for blame by the uninformed.
Yes, Skip and Stephen A. Smith and Cowherd, Hannity and Maddow can be maddeningly false and blowhardian.
But when you consider the thousand other news journalists striving to bring truth and accuracy into our homes, it is indeed a cheap shot and a cop-out to generalize and blame the "media."
The media is too huge and diversified for us to do this. So cut it out, or risk being seen as an uninformed lout.
Amen.
