play WR if TO is cut? He could be like a more athletic Harold Carmichael. Am I nuts?

I think he is a TE who at time can lineup wide but that is pretty common with athletic TE. However he could not replace a WR full time in my opinion

He would be the slowest receiver in the NFL and would get no seperation from any CB with a heartbeat.

No offense, but that is a very bad idea.

Marquis Colston TE conversion to WR would be the model.

This looks like a good idea to me anyone claiming to know the idea is "nuts" is portraying himself as another all-knowing talent evaluator. Who knows how fast Bennett would be 12-15 lbs lighter than he played this season and w/ an off-season of speed training. Colston fast?

Probably not a smart thing to do. Carmichael had more speed and in today's NFL you need to be a deep threat down the sidelines against corner if you're going to be a good WR. Bennett really can't do that. But he can go deep and beat LB's and safeties down the middle of the field against teams playing Cover 2 which leaves the deep middle vulnerable. Or if we put him in a 2 TE set that could leave him one-on-one with a linebacker and throw opposing defenses fits. Plus, Bennett can block which is a nice thing to have. You can go to a 2 TE set and have Bennett stay in for blocking and have Witten still go out for a pass. Protects the QB and still allows an effective receiver in Witten to go out for a pass. Then of course you can do the opposite (Witten block, Bennett go out for a pass) to keep the opposing defense off balance.

Bennett and Carmichael are two very different types of players and there's really no need to move Bennett to WR and if they did and even he was pretty good at making the conversion, it wouldn't solve any problems. I would personally take a guy who can play TE, help out in pass protection and run blocking, beat LB's and safeties on pass patterns and could occasionally line up out wide like a wide receiver than have a pretty decent, large wide receiver. You can do a lot of different and effective things with the former. The latter really doesn't give you much.

Speaking of Bennett playing WR, I wonder if Brad Johnson could play NT. :duck:

At 15lbs less Bennett would still be 250lbs!!! Marquis Colston is 225lbs. Bennett wouldn't have to lose 15lbs, it would be more like 40ish just to become a LARGE WR! Colston was NEVER anywhere near the size of Bennett.

Vincent Jackson is a 240 lbs WR.

If anything, Bennett would get as much seperation (if not more) as RW11 was able to generate last season. And Bennett could not run his routes any worse than Roy.

Bennett has a big frame and he's only 21... He's not going to get smaller.

On the contrary, he has room to add at least 10 pounds without losing any speed. He's going to be a 270-lb monster for us.

Bottom line, the kid has all-pro type talent at TE. Why move him?

I don't think he will be a good WR on a regular basis. Putting him outside on occassions just to create mismatches or to keep the defense guessing i think will be a good idea. But for a good WR he just seems not quick enough.

Second thing is to me he has all the physical tools to be an outstanding TE. It would be a waste of talent to make him a WR where he lacks talent IMO.
