The biggest hit on their income and finances came when their only child began using them to support a drug habit. She would purchase things in their name – then hock them to buy drugs. Despite their pleas for her to get help, she took Ray and Mattie down with her. She convinced Ray and Mattie to file bankruptcy telling them that “everything would turn out fine”. Matters couldn’t have gotten any worse when their daughter was found dead from an overdose.
Financially and emotionally bankrupt, Ray and Mattie then went through bouts of health problems including Ray’s diabetes, leg amputation, glaucoma, 5 bypasses and multiple stints. Mattie has had her share of bypasses, stints and heart surgery as well.
Up until 6 weeks ago, Ray would drive his scooter across Interstate 30 to the local Wal-Mart. He would fold balloons for tips – and those tips covered some of their bills. One day, while driving his scooter back from Wal-Mart, Ray suffered a stoke. He was instantly confused as he lost his sight and had to be driven home by a stranger. The doctors are vague about the prognosis of his eyes. Without his eyes, he can no longer fold balloons - so he feels that he can no longer entertain.
Now in their late seventies, Ray and Mattie find themselves without any steady income and living in a home that is desperate for repair. It is not handicap accessible and has suffered much damage as Ray stumbles around.
Jerry should help this guy out. Not only would it be a gesture of kindness, but it would be another plus for his public image.
