One, with the dearth of QBs out there, I think there would be a market for Dak.

Two, he's not good enough that we should be held hostage by him either.

I'd let him play it out. If he and his agents want to "play hardball", that's fine. Call their bluff and we'll "play hardball". Allow your client to assume any and all risk for 2019 and expect the franchise tag in 2020. No problem.

It gives the team more time to decide, and also gives a potential new coach in 202 the ability to decide for himself whether he wants to work with Dak or look elsewhere. Keeping your options open looks like the best course of action in my book.

To say nothing of the fact that, if more and more teams experience buyers remorse with contracts like Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins? Those numbers will start to slow down, or even drop by 2021.

That was said about every QB who ever got a big contract.

Dak has been to two Pro Bowls in 3 years and is clearly a team leader. He has his flaws but you can't say Dak won't get a big contract when there a ton of examples of lesser players who got huge deals.

The other factor you have to consider is that its just like the draft - every team has coaches that thinks they are the one smart guy that can fix the flaws in that player.

    Just draft another one.

If they fail then keep drafting.

But paying big money to a guy that has never hit 25 TD passes in a year is just absurd.

We can get his production somewhere else for half the cost.

    I lean that way too.

Unlike 1st rounders entering a 5th year of the original deal, Dak has only 3 years under his belt. One more year to be sure (or sure enough) is not crazy.

Now if they love him long term, I can see why they might just extend now as a good-will gesture. Big if though

I said in another thread that Dak has somehow gotten wind of what the FO is thinking contract-wise and he doesn’t like it. Hence these comments.

Look, I am not geeked up about paying Dak a big contract either. I'd make him play out this year on his rookie deal.

But I also realize the market is what the market is.............

You're right about teams paying mediocre players and I think everyone should sit back and learn a lesson from paying those mediocre players.

Making the pro bowl is a joke now days. Especially when the 2 best teams players don't go and others get in like Dak did this year.

If some other team wants to pay Dak a ton and lose because of it then let them. I don't want Dallas to be that team though.

Just draft someone. Go cheap. QB's on cheap contracts are going to and even winning superbowls. It's the big contract guys that are screwing their teams over.

Then let the market have him.

Let the Vikings or Redskins or some other stupid team eat that deal and lose because of it.

His contemporaries, Goff and Wentz aren't being extended. And I relaize that they're being paid more based on where they were drafted, but that's not what Dak is looking for, is it?

No, the Cowboys have leverage and they should use it. Do what's best for the entire organization, not a make-up call that's good for one individual.

If they are, they're forcing it and making a mistake that they don't have to make. That screams of arrogance, not intelligence. The same crap that's kept this team stuck with Garrett far longer than they should. The "we'll show you all" mindset. And they haven't shown anyone anything so far, other than that they were wrong.

I hate to say this but you are delusional on this issue. If you don't believe Jerry and Stephen are 100% sold on DaK, you haven't paid attention. You seem to think he's not good enough to even be an NFL starter, yet two former Cowboy HOF QBs disagree. Maybe, just maybe, your evaluation of Dak is off a bit.

I was going to point that out, Dak's "6th choice" Pro Bowl nod is a bigger joke than the actual game.

"Hey! You've made the Pro Bowl!"

    "What? You can't make it?"

"OK, who's the next name on our list?"

I am inclined to let Dak play for his contract. With the Linehan albatross gone and Amari there he should have no excuses. I believe he will earn a big contract but make him earn it.

    True.
To be fair, and as I mentioned, Goff and Wentz have two years left on their deals vs one.

But I agree. No need for the Cowboys to rush this. They have the leverage.

Jerry and Stephen i'm sure are sold on him. Especially since he sales more jerseys then just about any player in the league. I'm not basing my opinion on anything they think.

I also think Dak is a good solid player and of course he is good enough to be an NFL starter.

    My goal is championships........................................

What helps us get to a championship........................................

Paying mediocre QB's a lot of money is not winning anyone championships................................................

It's QB's on rookie contracts and vets that are taking paycuts who are winning championships........................

We did this with Romo. We paid him like he had won a superbowl and complained about the team around him. He finished his career with no playoff success because of it.

Now Dak who is far less of a QB then Romo is going to get this big contract and carry a weakened roster? Yeah right.

They do. And the Cowboys always have the franchise tag as opposed to that 5th year option. It would actually go far in "making up" the differences in money between the three. Dak would get to his "big year" money one year sooner than Goff and Wentz would.

An interesting take. We could be seeing some public negotiations.
