I agree that Chan got the axe too soon - the problem was the team's horrid talent-level, not his coaching. Did he make some bad decisions - some that blew up in his face? Sure. But why hire a first-time guy if you aren't committed to letting him develop?
I can't disagree with even a word of that.

I posted a stat in the countdown thread for 1981. Gailey was great at home, but stunk out loud on the road. In his 2 seasons he was 13-3 at Dallas, 5-11 on the road. I liked him as a person, was disappointed with him as a coach, but do think he got a raw deal and was axed too soon and Campo not nearly soon enough.

Campo never should have been hired.

I never liked that move from day 1. It just didn't make sense to me and it never will. Most of the time he just looked lost, he was a good coordinator but a terrible Head Coach.

Campo's occasional but obvious game day strategy mistakes convincingly showed that he wasn't ever going to be a top drawer head coach.

Still, given the salary cap situation, bad drafting, and the overinvolved owner undermining his authority, Campo was in a very bad situation. I don't think any coach would have had much success under those conditions.

At least Campo's players almost always played hard for him.

Campo was a bad hire; Gailey was a wrong hire.

AFC

Brian Billick - Baltimore Ravens...At one point I may have. Not so sure now.

Dick Jauron - Buffalo Bills...No.

Marvin Lewis - Cincinnati Bengals...One of my favorites but the player troubles in Cincy concern me. I really like the guy and always have. I am torn on this one.

Romeo Crennel - Cleveland Browns...No.

Mike Shanahan - Denver Broncos...Yes.

Gary Kubiak - Houston Texans...No.

Tony Dungy - Indianapolis Colts...Absolutely. I wanted him over Switzer. Still wish we had hired him.

Jack Del Rio - Jacksonville Jaguars...No, even though I like him.

Herman Edwards - Kansas City Chiefs...No, even though I like him.

Cam Cameron - Miami Dolphins...No. This could change if he succeeds.

Bill Belichick - New England Patriots...Oh hell yeah.

Eric Mangini - New York Jets...Yes. IMO one of the exciting young coaches in the NFL.

Lane Kiffin - Oakland Raiders...No.

Mike Tomlin - Pittsburgh Steelers...No. This could change if he succeeds.

Norv Turner - San Diego Chargers...No.

Jeff Fisher - Tennessee Titan...Yes.

NFC

Ken Whisenhunt - Arizona Cardinals...No. This could change if he succeeds.

Bobby Petrino - Atlanta Falcons...No.

John Fox - Carolina Panthers...Yes.

Lovie Smith - Chicago Bears...Yes.

Wade Phillips - Dallas Cowboys...N/A.

Rod Marinelli - Detroit Lions...No.

Mike McCarthy - Green Bay Packers...No.

Brad Childress - Minnesota Vikings...No.

Sean Payton - New Orleans Saints...Yes.

Tom Coughlin - New York Giants...At one time yes, No.

Andy Reid - Philadelphia Eagles...Oh hell yeah.

Scott Linehan - St. Louis Rams...No, but I like him.

Mike Nolan - San Francisco 49ers...Yes.

Mike Holmgren - Seattle Seahawks...Yes.

Jon Gruden - Tampa Bay Buccaneers...Yes.

Joe Gibbs - Washington Commanders...At one time yes, No.

A little clarification would be nice. If it's, which do you think is a better HC then the list is a bit longer. If it's which coach is better for the Cowboys, with this roster make-up, it's a bit shorter. If it's, which coach is better for future success with the Cowboys, the list is different and includes assistants and college coaches.

Taking the time to read the original question would help solve this for you.

Below is a list of current NFL coaches.

Hypothetically speaking, which ones would you see as a better fit for the current Cowboys than Wade Phillips?

Which ones would you would rather have coaching the Cowboys (over Wade Phillips)?
Wasn't that easy?

Why Jeff Fisher? I'm just curious. Does he run the defense anymore? Did he ever?Because I know Chow is running the O.

I would probably take Mike Holmgren over any coach. Payton would go no 3

Amazing how Capt Kangaroo has vaulted into the top tier of current NFL coaches without so much as calling ONE play!!

I'd bet $$-2-doughnuts that if he was at ANY OTHER team in a HC position, and ANYONE else was our headman, he wouldn't crack the top 25.

Homer much ppl?

FWIW, I'd take Sean Payton over him in a NYM!

Not unlike the boredom-inspired "Who's better than Romo?" threads, the list should be at least ten names deep. Probably closer to 15.

Nothing like a thread to make people answer questions without really thinking.

Most everyone chose a core of a few coaches to have over Wade, but the truth, all except one would not survive this town with the lack of Super Bowl titles in their time as head coaches.

Andy Reid...who has done less with more? He has one Super Bowl appearance for all that talent. Talk about under achieving. Heck, we had that with Parcells.

Mike Holmgren...How long did it take to get Seattle to a Super Bowl...8 years? The truth is this guy would have been run out on a rail long before he made it to his eighth year.

Tony Dungy...Who here really thought the Colts would make it past the Patriots? If not he would have been praised as the greaest guy to ever coach the Cowboys...And it would have been all said right after he got ripped for not being able to win the big one and how it was about time for him to be fired.

You can say this about almost every coach in the league. Me; I'd perfer to just wait to see Wade coach the Cowboys before I contemplate who his replacement should be.

I just see this as a "the grass is greener" kinda thing.
