Amen. I'm excited to see this guy.

Wonder if he'll play ahead of Butler once he learns the D.

he'll probably take his place as the strong-side OLB, moving Butler back to the weakside

Jason Williams is the one that should get well. He may not know the position, but he can flat bring it and was getting better each game in preseason ... I wonder if this will be a redshirt year for Curtis while he learns OLB ...

Well, no doubt on Jason Williams. I think he's the one rookie that can really add something immediately this year. We simply don't have anyone with his kind of speed at LB. And he likes to hit.

Curtis Johnson should be able to play on defense before too long. You wouldn't want him playing the run out of a two-point stance, but he can come in and be a third down rusher as soon as he learns the calls.

I guess because he's fast, and everyone has been raving about his pass-rushing ability since college

plus the fact that he's unknown, and offers a better hope for a pass-rush that I don't see anyone else besides Ware providing

What's it going to be then, eh?

I agree.

I don't understand it either. What makes him a more viable option than Victor Butler or Octavien? So he "learns the calls", what makes him substantially better? I have an open mind, but I just don't see much evidence.

I'm probably the biggest Curtis Johnson shill on the site. I want everyone healthy, not just him. We need them all.

No one's saying he'll be great, or some kind of savior... But he has played in the league for a year and the coaches do really like him.

Ware getting dinged yesterday showed just how thin we are at OLB, and at least this guy has a little experience. Plus probably still some upside.

Still cant understand why the Colts would cut him over a hamstring when pass rushers are always at a premium. Makes no sense. Not saying he doesnt have ability but.

He is, or was, only around 245 lbs and supposedly the new DC wants bigger linemen than the small, quick guys Dungy preferred for his system.

Good point.

One game with no sacks!!

Bench Ware and Spencer now!!!

the difference is that I know Ware is a dynamic pass-rusher

haven't seen anything to convince me that Spencer is, not even in a limited role

Yet you're convinced that Johnson is?

Wade said today that CuJo's conditioning might not be ready yet, but he was fine physically.

OLB Curtis Johnson Makes Practice Debut
Posted by nickeatman at 9/16/2009 1:43 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

It’s only natural to put the primary focus on guys like Tony Romo, Felix Jones and Gerald Sensabaugh when watching practice Wednesday, which was held inside at the cramped 50-yard field at Carroll High School in nearby Southlake.

Romo practiced despite a sprained right ankle and Felix seems fine with a quad bruise. Sensabaugh may be hurting a little with those bruised ribs, but he was out there as well.

The Cowboys also got outside linebacker Curtis Johnson on the field for the first time Wednesday. The second-year pro, claimed off waivers two weeks ago from the Colts, hasn’t practiced until today because of a strained hamstring, that he sustained while playing in Indianapolis. That led to his release from the Colts, who were trying to sneak through waivers on the Waived/Injured list and get him back.

But the Cowboys like his size and pass-rushing ability. Johnson played defensive end in the 4-3 scheme, but said he doesn’t see many problems making the transition. He has played as a stand-up linebacker in college and was primarily an edge-rusher with the Colts.

Once he gets to full strength and comfortable with the defense, Johnson would join rookie Victor Butler as the backup outside linebackers behind starters DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer.

Bingo, You hit the Nail on the Head! At the same time though, its good if some backup players have to play due to a few players banged up.

Thats what you want when you go into late november and December, for your backups to have experience and be ready if need be and the regulars healthy.
