Cutting Miles Austin is a no brainer

Simply to get under the cap, cutting this guy makes perfect sense given that we get absolutely no production out of him anymore. Never have I seen a play crash and burn as quickly as Miles Austin. Really glad I never bought a jersey.

Cutting Miles Austin is like cutting Marion Barber, it'll open up this offense again. More playing reps and snaps for Terrence Williams and Cole Beasley. I hope the Cowboys wrap up Beasley quickly, because he is going to really explode onto the scene in his 3rd year with increased playing time. Williams should be much better too. Hopefully he can show consistency from his early flashes.

Cutting (in june) Austin saves 5.5 million against the cap (of which I believe we are over about 20 million last I heard). We'll save another 4.5 million in 2015.

I look forward to the end of the Miles Austin era and hope in the future we can focus more on offensive linemen as opposed to skill players. Though I wouldn't mind getting a running back at some point in the draft. Not a Randle type though.

I don't think he has even broke 200 yards total this season?

Unless he takes a large reduction in pay, yes. He very well may accept a pay reduction, because he's not ignorant enough to not see that he wouldn't get anything more than a 1yr 1.5m "prove-it" deal, and we would likely pay more to retain him.

Broaddus brought this up and said Austin would most likely be in Dallas next yr. He put it this way in saying Dallas could tell him something like, make 2-3 mil in dallas or make 1 mil somewhere else

I agree. Its going to be a bit of a puzzle as to who you cut and when. If you designate him a june first cut you might be able to use his money to resign Waters and your draft picks.... Might even have enough left over to sustain you through next season. However, I'm not sure if there is another player that would give you more cap relief by making them a June 1st cut. He seems the logical choice, but its hard to say right now.

Austin's base salary is 5.5 million. Even taking a cut to 2 million isn't worth keeping him, when you need to spread that wealth to other positions. At this point in his career he is just a hindrance to youthful players who can stay healthy.

I should probably keep my mouth shut, but I disagree. Maybe he has fallen off a cliff, but if he regains his prior form that he had early last season and when healthy prior, he is certainly worth 2M to keep around even if he is only healthy for a 5-6 game stretch, plus as usual he comes with no headaches (outside of his injuries, but ya'll know what I mean). Romo still trusts him, and for some inexplicable reason he is still drawing quite heavy coverage. 2M to stick around is win-win for both sides.

That extra 3+ mil can help get us a Dlineman

Not exactly. The first goal is that we're going to have to get under the cap. Going further yeah, we need to put money towards linemen. What dollars go where, is a bit of semantics, but regardless, we can't afford his lack of production at pretty much any cost.

No offense, but this is why we always have the status quo by keeping around players without any tread left. Even at 2 million he takes away reps from players who deserve them, and from putting that money else where on the team.

The team barely gets anything in terms of cap room by cutting him and even with a June 1st designation they don't free up nearly enough room. Little over $5M or in that range?

Even if he took a base salary his cap hit would probably be close to $4M just because of all the previous restructuring. His contract, much like Ware's, has been horribly managed. How many years can any team expect to have vet minimum base salaries on $50M contracts?

His combined base salaries for 2011 to 2013 is only half of his $5.5M base salary for next year.

Austin and ware both need to go. No point in keeping either of them even if they take a half off pay cut. We could get a wr and de that will be way more productive than they are for that much.

Oh he's gone.

This team can't afford to even pay him $ 2 mil even on a reduced deal at his production.

Kills me to say this..but he's never going to be serviceable.

He's a great guy and good athlete.

Sorry to see what has happened for him.

Depending on what other moves they make, they may have to make him a June 1 cut, just to get under. Not ideal in the least, but it's kind of the corner they've painted themselves into.
