Just to take a brief break from PacMan . . . .

NFL | D. Avery works out at Pro Day
Wed, 2 Apr 2008 11:19:54 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Houston WR Donnie Avery worked out at his school's Pro Day Monday, March 31. Avery ran a 4.34 and 4.35 40-yard dash, had a 37 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, six-inch broad jump, a 3.91-second short shuttle, a 6.30-second three-cone drill and ran position drills. He measured in at 5-foot-11 1/8 and 182 pounds.

Those are pretty impressive numbers.

Can anyone vouch for his hands and route running skills?

He has good hands but route running is an issue because he played in that run and shoot offense at Houston so ran very basic quick routes. I only watched Houston a few times but this guy was clearly their best weapon.

Sad but true fact is that I also like that he was number 2 ... my preferred number:)

Probably rates as scouts as a returner and slot WR type. Not very big or physical but excellent speed and quickness.

I saw him play against Bama last season and he looked like lightning in a bottle. He was incredibly quick and fast and gave the Bama D a lot of trouble.

I'm surprised I haven't heard more about him.

Those are good numbers, He is big enough as well. Especially with that kind of speed.

I have never seen him play so it will be interesting what others have to say.

Maybe he would be a nice 4th round pick up for us? Esp if he can return punts.

Rather than spending a 1st on a guy like D Jackson (who I think is too small anyway), Avery might be a good and cheap substitute, esp if we don't trade for a WR or draft one early on.

I don't recall him returning punts at UH. Could be because UH rarely forced anybody to punt. Ugh @ the D. Because UH's QB situation was so suspect last year, it was hard to focus on their passing game. I was surprised that Avery's stats were as good as they were.

Anthony Aldridge was the star of the UH offense last year, IMO. Unfortunately, he's too small to be a RB.

Could that be right?!?! That is crazy fast.

He looks a lot like Terry Glenn honestly.... minus the razor sharp routes.... just very quick overall and looks small.

180 pounds is fairly tiny.

Probably played at about 170 to 175 last season.

Donnie Avery
Height: 5-11 | Weight: 192 | 40-Time: 4.45

Official Bio

Strengths:
Excellent timed speed...Has a burst and can separate...Adequate height...Smooth athlete...Good ball skills and body control...A deep threat who will stretch the field vertically...Has soft hands...A hard worker with good intangibles...Productive...Has a lot of experience...Great special teamer who has returned both kicks and punts.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the ideal bulk that you look for...Is not a great route runner...Isn't very strong or physical...Struggles when jammed at the line...Won't do much after the catch...Doesn't work the middle of the field much...He is not much of a blocker.

Notes:
Played in a pass-happy system in college...Is somewhat one-dimensional...He is a long way away from being a polished and well-rounded receiver and will need to be developed but you just can't teach the type of pure speed he has...Will light it up in workouts but might never be more than a #3 or #4 option and a return guy.

Avery does have nice production. His number of catches and total yards and TDs generally improved from year to year. That's good to see.

I know Aldridge returned some kicks and Teric W did as well.

Houston had plenty of offense but they didn't bother playing defense most of the year, rofl.

Avery was a stud returner at Alief though. I believe he was Texas Football All First team 3 years ago.

No kidding. I was always shocked at the scores. Get this. They were supposed to be a 3-4 defense, but they had lineman playing in the 250 range. Srsly. That's why the scores looked like basketball scores. That's why I'm not too upset about Art Briles and his kooky offense went to Baylor.

Didn't he have nothing to do with the defense? I know he doesn't here (at Baylor). He hired away the secondary coach from Penn State, who's now running a 4-3 with linemen who are definitely bigger than 250, although probably not much more effective pass rushers.

In any case, the offense is really what BU fans are worried about, and his offense is pretty sick. We figured to be giving up big numbers anyway. At least we can balance it out on the other side. If we get defensive pressure, it's a bonus.

Briles is a heck of a coach! U of H needs to spend some serious cash on facilities and whatnot.

I hate Briles moving to the Big12.

Last thing Texas Tech needs(Briles was an asst there) is another team competing for the few positions they can lure in top talent at(QB, WR, pass blocking OL).

Way I hear it, he's on Tampa Bays wish list Big Time.

Ya know, he may make someone with BIG WRs a reasonable Wes Welker clone.

I am not sure he hes that odd body control and strength but he is certainly faster and there is value in a guy who can outrun folks from the slot. While he may not be a technician like say Marvin Harrison I feel there are a good 5 or 6 routes he could run with precision fairly quickly and he'll be a dang tough cover for these 3rd and 4th DBs.

I tend to agree with you on this. I mean, Galloway doesn't exactly run a plethora of routes either. He runs speed routes and he is pretty effective in there offense. If he can catch the ball, he would serve his purpose well. Heck, in our offense, he would serve his purpose but he's not my first choice by any stretch. Will be interesting to see how this falls out.

He had a hands off approach to the defense, but when he first arrived, it was a 4-3. He went to a 3-4 and then for some reason, I read an article about the d-lineman all getting smaller, since their strength was quickness over mass. If that was the case, they should've gone back to a 4-3. That kinda decision falls on the head coach, especially when he specifically made staff changes to incorporate the 3-4 principles.

You're going to get alot of offense, but you at least want them to sneeze on the defense too.

Briles did a good job. I was very happy with what he was able to do record-wise. However, I hated looking at b-ball type scores of a football game. Or go to a game only to see the team lose 48-45, cuz the defense can't stop anybody. That happened way too many times. Plus, I'm hoping the new coach can implement somewhat of a pro-style offense so that the players have a better chance of being drafted by not having the "system" label put on 'em. AB did a good job, but change is good.

As for the facilities, don't be mistaken, UH has some very good facilities. They spent millions building this huge Athletic/Alumni Center for the student-athletes as well as updated ancient Robertson stadium. Of course it doesn't compare to some of the other colleges, but they don't scrimp either, especially since the premiere programs, football and basketball, haven't set the world on fire in the postseason.
