D-Line Was a Minor Disappointment Game #1

Yes, Eli is hard to sack. He knows our defense well - heck we were in the most simple defense you can have per Miranelli's own admission last night - and Elis constant 3 step drop was evident from the start.

However the Rushmen didn't exactly "deliver" the rush. Outside of Gregory, noone got a consistent push against a fairly crappy Oline. Crawford got a sack and some run stuffs. But consistently the middle of the pocket didnt get the push that would stop Eli from being able to step up and see the field. On several occasions in fact, the middle of the pocket got pushed wide and Eli was able to step to a run/pass for first down.

Lawrence was strangely no where to be found the entire night. Likewise Mincey got zero push and also lost outside containment a few times.

Dallas D held the Giants to 9 points and around 280 yards. Both of those stats are excellent.

But the "Rushmen" didn't show any more than 2014 group in Game #1. And that was a bit of a disappointment.

Not gonna sack the QB much on 3 step drops
But they rushed well enough to keep them using 3 step drops and that takes away the big play which is a victory in itself

The only thing I didn't like was how wide the DT's played, even into the 4th when they start gouging us in the run game.

Lawrence was invisible, but he absorbed a bunch of double teams after Gregory went down.

No d-line was going to get to Manning when most of his throws were on three step drops. The Giants game plan seemed to be not letting Manning get sacked, we rarely if ever saw him sit back there and look to second or third options. Whenever he did, we got to him or collapsed the pocket

they got disruptive. I think they did better than the Giants D. Our bad play calling made their job easier

And that kept them from really getting in a rythm. They avoided long developing plays to avoid the rush and they didn't have the personnel to move the ball. If the Cowboys were ahead like they should have been, they could have really pinned their ears back.

Umm. It's extremely difficult to sack a QB who does quick drops and gets the ball out. I didn't sit back and grade the DL during the game, but I think you are way off base here.

Manning is really really good at getting the ball out quickly. He'll throw it away too if he doesn't like the look. He's really conservative when they have a lead.

You gotta go back and watch what the Giants offense did. Notice how Eli threw it more than 20 yards downfield about one time the whole game? He was never even able to do anything. He was 20 of 36 for 193 yards. His freaking YPA was barely over 5 yards for the night.

Let a team try to drop back and let pass plays develop against the line and see how that goes.

Losing Gregory hurts and Lawrence didn't show up big last night, but they did exactly what they needed to.

I mean, if the offense doesn't turn it over stupidly and drop 3rd down conversions and the Cowboys win 35-6 last night, would you even be thinking about how the defense didn't do well enough? Because that's basically how much offense they gave up.

I thought the entire defense was terrific. The 3 step drops prevent much of a pass rush, but he wouldn't be taking 3 step drops if they were not concerned about the pass rush. Lawrence saw some double teams and even played some at RDE after Gregory was out. Jack Crawford played some at LDE but he has bulked up too much to be an outside rusher.

In Marinelli's scheme there will always be some gaps in the DL against the run on occasion because of his rush first mentality and love of stunts. The LBs have to take up the slack in when that happens and they did a reasonable job of it.

I think it starts and ends with Hayden & Mcclain. If we are going to play them every week we are going to have some issues. I think if you partnered Coleman with Crawford there would be a lot more push.

Agree with this, think we will get gashed from time to time on run defense, but the Giants played to keep Eli upright. As the season wears on, we will get a better gage of our front 7, but no complaints so far. The last Giant drive we were getting gashed pretty good, but will take that, when he cannot step into any throws down the field.
