I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the offseason unrelentingly boring, at least until April when the draft talk starts heating up. The Off-Topic zone is usually my first port of call during this down period. So I thought I'd start a thread with daily song download recommendations. I'd love to hear other peoples suggestions. So here goes:
(album title in parenthesis)

Beck- Side of The Road (Sea Change)
- A bluesy number. Beck just plays with such soul and his voice is haunting.

Tortoise- Ten-Day Interval (TNT)
- Instrumental, very moody. Makes me feel like I'm in a Brazilian rainforest or some other such magical place.

Ace Frehley- New York Groove (Ace Frehley)
- The best song from the best of the Kiss solo albums. For anyone old enough to remember, it invokes the spirit of the old Cadbury's Easter Egg commercials.

I always liked Gene Simmons' best.:D

Here's a website that has some fun facts and unknown things about all the KISS guys.

Did you know that Ace Frehley designed the KISS Logo? I didn't.

The Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers

It's the song you hear during those aggravating University of Phoenix ads, but remixed to sound worse. The actual version is an excellent orchestration, one of my favorite songs.

A few more:

Broken Social Scene- Anthems For A 17 Year Old Girl (not a big fan of these guys, but this is a very good song.)

Spoon- Lines in The Suit (you can really hear the Elvis Costello influence in this one.)

Tindersticks- Tiny Tears (Sopranos fans will recognize this from season 1 where Tony is depressed in the shower and later when they try to assassinate him. For me, it's a bit of Lou Reed's Perfect Day in it.)

Tindersticks are a long-time fave -- nice one jem

My song for the day is Only Skin by Joanna Newsom from last year's excellent album Y's. The song runs 17 minutes and will worm its way into your brain for months.

Waiting Room and Repeater by ****** - just some funky, mellow stuff, really not much classification for it. But it's very groovy, without a doubt

Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me! - if you like aggravated punk-folk music, you will like this song. One of the greatest bands in existence.

Oh yeah, it's a scene, man.

i plan on checking others suggestions out when i get to a 'puter with speakers. :D

So hopefully people will post more great songs every day. ought to put a description of what it is, too. So that, if yeag comes in and suggests Aqua's "Barbie Girl", we know we can just avoid it.

Some more:

Self-Serve Gas Station by The Rheostatics (Whale Music.)- I love the Rheostatics. My favourite Canadian band (sadly they are breaking up.) Might be hard to find, but highly recommended and worth the effort.

Life's What You Make It- Talk Talk (I don't have the album)- Great song from the '80s.

Station To Station- David Bowie (Station To Station)- A ten-minute epic that really rocks by the end.

You know, we were playing this one as we made dinner tonight - I never realized why the song is called Rebellion (Lies) -- I'm at the stove and my wife starts singing along with the backing vocals "lies, lies" - Sometimes I'm stupid.

Today is three songs that I loved when I first started getting into music, when I was around 5 years old. I was lucky to have an older brother and sister who exposed me to some good music. Here goes:

The Clash- Bankrobber (Black Market Clash)- The Clash were one of the best. This song shows how well they could mix up their style, from punk to reqqae to dub, etc.

The Jam- Man in The Corner Shop (Sound Effects)- The Jam were a great band, very influential. I can't stand Paul Weller now, but that doesn't lessen how good he was back in the day.

The Cars- All Mixed Up (The Cars)- Great closing song to an awesome debut album.

Whenever I hear these songs, I get a weird sensation of playing Dungeons and Dragons. Like I said, these were formative-year songs.

Just listened the a great album from last year (one of my top 5) - Shut Up I am Dreaming by the Sunset Rubdown. The lead guy is 1/2 of Wolf Parade. The title track Shut Up I am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings is my pick today.

More random recommendations:

Radiohead- Morning Bell (Kid A)- For me, the best song on the best album by arguably the best band going.

Joni Mitchell- All I Want (Blue)- Classic confessional song. If you don't have Blue, get it.

The Who- Rael (Sell Out)- You can hear the genesis of Tommy in this and a number of other songs on Sell Out.
