Dak Prescott And Ezekiel Elliott Had The Best Rookie Seasons In Cowboys’ History

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2017...-seasons-in-dallas-cowboys-history-2017-draft

We’ve been writing a series of articles using Pro Football Reference’s Approximate Value metric.

Approximate Value (AV) method is an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year (since 1950).

It’s not a perfect stat, as its creator acknowledges.

"AV is not meant to be a be-all end-all metric. Football stat lines just do not come close to capturing all the contributions of a player the way they do in baseball and basketball. If one player is a 16 and another is a 14, we can't be very confident that the 16AV player actually had a better season than the 14AV player. But I am pretty confident that the collection of all players with 16AV played better, as an entire group, than the collection of all players with 14AV."

Nonetheless, it’s a stat that can be used to compare players across different positions and over different years...

I think Dak and Zeke were phenomenal last season and will both have great careers, but they weren't the best Cowboy rookies I've ever seen. I do agree with having Dorsett #1 on their scale. But the #2 rookie season I've ever seen came from Everson Walls. With the talent that we already had in the secondary this kid walks in and had big time QBs scared to look his way. Still haunts me to this day that his rookie season ended with the catch.

Dak coming in as a rookie qb impresses me much more than Zeke coming in as a rookie rb. There is much more to learn and execute as a qb. So, honest question...

Compared to other Cowboys rookies (just qb's and running backs), how many of them benefited from an o line like what Dak and Zeke had and how much of a difference do ya'll think it would or wouldn't have made?

Wasn't it you that based an opinion upon it only matters what is accomplished?

People need to stop sleeping on Xavier Woods.
Please forgive me, and I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck. I'm just trying to understand what made you mention Woods in the context of this thread?
You think he'll have a rookie year that ranks him among the Cowboys' top rookies of all time?

Nevermind, AsthmaField. I initially read only the chart and not the story provided in the link. I see now in the story they talk about the other rookies. I small-screen my window at work so I don't see the entire content of a particular link, and I must have missed that part at first glance. :(

Fair question.

I don't know what he'll do in his rookie season, I just think that he's going to be a more than solid player and will be a mainstay in the secondary. Will that happen as a rookie? I have no idea. Will it happen year 2? Again, I have no idea.

What I do know is that given a chance to play and impact the game, I feel like he will do so with regularity. It isn't just his physical skills, which aren't special... it is his mental makeup and knack for the position that has me bullish on his ability to really help the defense.

To be fair though, as you mention, this might not have been the thread to bring it up in.

Don't believe so but I honestly don't recall. In this case I've always said I think both of them are great but there's no way either of them would have the same success behind most other NFL o lines. That's just common sense.

When you really analyze this fact, it kind of lessens the performance of both of them.

For this year's group, I would be very happy if we had 4-5 guys perform like Collins and Brown last year.

You're good. I saw in the article that it started talking about this draft class. I didn't see that when I originally posted and read the link (which I explained above). So you were in context bringing up Woods in this thread. :)

Honestly, it had been a while since I posted that and I couldn't remember what prompted me to do so in this thread.

So I was just like guys do with their wife... "yeah, your right. I'm sorry."
