Dallas Cowboys defensive line not according to plan
http://thelandryhat.com/2016/06/07/dallas-cowboys-defensive-line-not-according-plan/

Even with the absence of two starters on the defensive line, the Dallas Cowboys can still prosper with help from coaching and the schedule.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

The Dallas Cowboys organization, contrary to what you will see on the field opening night against the division rival New York Giants, put a plan into place to rebuild their defensive line in the wake of departures such as DeMarcus Ware (money) and Jason Hatcher (age/money).

Two years ago, Dallas traded up in the second round and drafted DeMarcus Lawrence to rush from one end. The very next draft, they seized an opportunity and selected Randy Gregory in the very same round to play opposite Lawrence. Whenever a top ten talent slips, the question besides why is he slipping is always how far does he fall before the reward outweighs the risk.

Unfortunately, while the Joneses, Jason Garrett and Will McClay were right that sixtieth overall pick was too good to pass up, they are now dealing with the risk part of that deal as Gregory is suspended for four games for the very same issue that caused his draft stock to fall...

I'm glad this Dline wasn't constructed according to plan. If it was then I'd question the sanity of all those in charge. It should be obvious to everyone that the Dline is one of the weakest position groups on the team, and is terrible compared to playoff caliber d lines.

Ryan Russell played 3-4 end at Purdue not LB.

Mayowa's listed weight of 240 is from 3 years ago and is not accurate any longer. No idea where the blogger got 235.

No mention of David Irving who has a strong chance to start at LE as well.

Not stressed over the first 4 games. Winnable games.

It should not have to be this way, but if anyone can make chicken salad out of chicken excrement, it’s Rod Marinelli.
Made me think of our members who love dissing Marinelli.

"If anyone can work with 'less,' it would seem to be Marinelli"......

How much longer are the Cowboys gonna try and sell this to the public? It really gets tired....especially this year when we all know we have less talent than last year.

So If Marinelli failed to delivery last year w/ more talent...how can we actually believe he is gonna succeed this year w/ less?

Sounds like the "fall guy" is being prepped:huh:

I say good, because when we think it's set, it gets screwed up anyway. Time for us to luck out and ball out!

Dline is the main reason this team will not be a contender this year.

I believe the DLine is actually one of the units that can be turned around the quickest this season, the Cowboys only have to willing to make the moves, some may be painful but results would be a significant improvement.

First, trade for DT Muhammad Wilkerson. Jets will not extend him due to having 2 younger 1st rounders 3-4 DEs on the roster. His value is at its lowest right now. Package players (Leary, TWilliams, McFadden, Church/Wilcox, etc.) and a future pick. Second, sign either Dwight Freeney or Greg Hardy to one year incentive laden contract. This would improve both the pass rush and the run stopping on DL immediately.

Signing Wilkerson to 3-4 year big dollar contract may be painful (he's only 27), and re-signing Greg Hardy may be even MORE painful, but if the Cowboys are in truly in WIN-NOW mode, then go all in and improve the DL now, not in 2 or 3 years. There are TOO many youngsters on the DL who are high upside, very little production. Need some proven playmakers right now if the ring is the thing.

Wilkerson on the inside (with TCraw, Irving, Collins in rotation) and Hardy/Freeney on the outside (Gregory, Mayowa/McAdoo in rotation) would provide a fearsome pass rush for the Cowboys. This would also allow both DLaw and TCraw more one on ones and elevate their production (at least to same level as last season, if not better).

I wonder how many minutes of this guys life he's wasted by posting a scenario in every single DL threat that has absolutely 0 chance of happening.

Division games are usually close no matter the talent of either team. San Fran and Chicago isn't great either so if we come out 3-1 I will take it.

Split division games. ....possibly win both on offense then beat SF and CHI. Glad to play teams like GB on week 6 after Dlaw and Gregory are back for a game first

When Lawrence and Gregory return we'll see. It's not set in stone that we'll fail yet.

No its not.

Everybody wants to play the game on paper.

I look at it like this..

Lawrence and Gregory are starting the season as injured and will get some rest.

Thats not a bad thing for a 16 game season.

The chance both of them will be healthy towards the end of the season goes up.

The fact that as much as we have needed DL since Ware left has not caused us to draft any with our #1s and we took OL and DB instead.

So there is a philosophy in place that has been added too with Elliott.

Its all about Romo.

As long as he is our QB..that will not change.

So I think we all have to accept this.

IDK our starters upfront aren't that shabby. DLaw & Gregory both have major potential. Add in Thornton & Crawford & I think the unit should be more than just serviceable. Besides the O is pretty much set. I think the next few drafts are going all out D except maybe for QB & WR. Any of the 4 starters would be awesome rotational guys if it turns out they aren't quite good enough to be starters.

I think that coaching will affect A LOT into how this D line plays the first few games. You can scheme towards a players strengths and put them in the best position to make a play. Now, I understand talent plays a very major role in how football players perform, but scheme and coaching can help too. If Mayowa is a speed guy, don;t have him waste time with moves, just beat your guy off the ball. While Russell is bigger in seize, if he doesn't have very many moves, get him strong and just bull rush. These are examples, not the gospel, but a lot can be done to "maintain" the D line from giving up too much in the absence of our starters. And who knows, we may find a diamond in the rough.

It could be worse, I could have your waste of a life and crappy attitude. I am thankful for the small things in life like discussing how my favorite team can improve and challenge for championships, even if it requires bumping into the small minded negative nancies on occasion.

With all the new names on the roster this year I don't think anybody knows what they are talking about when they critique anything about this team. We'll know what we have once we see it, not before.
