Dallas Cowboys: Is Damien Wilson an elite coverage linebacker?

http://thelandryhat.com/2017/06/24/dallas-cowboys-damien-wilson-elite-coverage-linebacker/

Despite playing only 283 defensive snaps last season, Pro Football Focus names Dallas Cowboys’ Damien Wilson as one of the NFL’s elite coverage linebackers.

While all the focus on second-year linebacker Jaylon Smith this offseason due to his draft status and recovery from a devastating knee injury, hidden gems on the depth chart can get easily lost in the media haze. One of those sleepers appears to be linebacker Damien Wilson.

The former fourth round selection out of Minnesota is entering third season in Dallas. And despite playing just 283 defensive snaps in 2016, Pro Football Focus has named him one the league’s elite coverage linebackers...

I'm thinking that how this group of 'rooks' are handled, will go a very long ways in how good this Cowboys team is in fact, at turn-overs.

FRISCO, Texas – He might be a forgotten starter, but he’s a starter all the same.

In this pass-happy era of football, when NFL defenses routinely play with five and six defensive backs on the field, Damien Wilson tends to be a bit overlooked. Entering his third season, Wilson figures to be the Cowboys’ starting strong side linebacker – it’s just a matter of how much that gets him onto the field. Taking over on the strong side in Week 6 last fall, Wilson played roughly 283 defensive snaps last season, or roughly 27 percent. By comparison, Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown played 61 percent and 66 percent of the Cowboys’ snaps at various cornerback spots.

The changing nature of the game might require fewer three-linebacker formations, but that’s no matter to the Cowboys. With how Wilson has progressed in the past year, the coaching staff is finding plenty for him to do...

COACH’S CORNER: TURNER WEST ON LINEBACKERS POISED TO MAKE BIG JUMP IN 2017
by Kristi Scales | Jun 23, 2017 | Articles, The Team

Assistant linebackers coach Turner West is excited about a young group of players who are poised to make the next big leap in their careers.

Jaylon Smith has garnered the majority of attention from Cowboys Nation as the former Notre Dame star works his way back onto the practice field after spending a year rehabbing from a career-threatening knee injury. But for West, Smith is not the only young linebacker who will team with All Pro Sean Lee to form an improved LB corps. West joined 5PB to talk about 3 young linebackers in particular...

Q: At this point last year, you told us that Damien Wilson was a guy who was going to make a big leap as he entered his second season. Then he suffered an eye injury during a freak accident while playing paintball with his friends; the accident occurred a week before 2016 Training Camp. Are you thinking this could be the year Wilson really has a “breakout” performance?

WEST: “Damien’s been working real hard and made a lot of improvement since last year. Missing training camp last year with the eye injury put him a little bit behind the rest of the group. This offseason he’s on the right path and hopefully stays healthy for a full training camp. He looks good, is working hard and moving well, and really progressing.”...

Had Gregory been able to stay clean and Green healthy, we'd be looking at our starters at RDE and at RT. Pair them with B. Jones, Collins and Wilson with contributions coming from Nzeocha and Swaim, the class of 2015 could have been a very very good haul.

If Jaylon is not ready to be a starter for whatever reason, I believe that they will look at Wilson to be the other Nickel LB next to Lee and probably move to MLB as the starter.

Going to go out on a limb and say Wilson's sample size in coverage isn't even close to those other guys making that a pretty pointless graphic.

Elite is way over the top...if he's just good in coverage playing a prominent role this year we should all be happy. There's a decent chance he won't even be on the field in the nickel tho so this might even be a semi pointless conversation

young talent across the board...gotta love the direction...the DBs are WAY younger, the LB's are younger (other than Lee) and the DL are all youngish...

that bodes well for the future

Thanks for making up a fictitious surmise, developing the fictitous situation, and then delivering a summation on a fictitious presentation.

Hey, garbage in...garbage out.

Confirmation with opinion is so much better afterwards.

Damien Wilson played 283 defensive snaps last year. Jordan Hicks played 970. Sound fictitious or like common sense to you? Or is the latter too much for you?

Now, for a young player, see if learning at a proven level resonates around the bell tower area...

and jump right in Trouty, if you are not carrying a mouse in your Army gloves.

What's odd is Wilson comes off the field in Nickel, but apparently plays some when the Cowboys go Dime. I don't recall seeing this but I've heard Broaddus discuss this. Seems backwards....

This is that infamous third season, where we'll all be looking for long termed indicators on Wilson. Me, I'm expecting them...
