Dallas Cowboys ON SI: Pickens' projected contract

I agree and maybe there'll be some reasonable thinking there from the agent and the player knowing this that they don't go for the juggler and they find a happy medium and a compromise...

That's why you have to franchise tag the guy the franchise tag opens up I believe before free agency I guess one of the first things that happens after the season's over is they allow you to have a few weeks to barter with the tag on your players before they get offers...

I don't know the whole rules to it but the tag shouldn't be looked at as an anchor they should make sure they know hey we're going to tag you just so we have time to negotiate just so we can see where your values at so you can see where your values at.. They should use the tag on this particular player as a negotiating Resource that's it it gives you more time.

There's no way he plays on the tag without causing problems this will be as bad or worse than Parsons, Parsons was already on the 5th year option that's why I thought for sure that was gonna get done even if he held out into the season he would lose almost $2 million a game but it would get done like it did with Emmitt Smith it didn't It got so out of control in social media in the public eye even Jerry had a line and he let him walk....

In this case you don't have a player on a 5th year option you have a franchise tag and he doesn't have to sign it he can hold this up he can hold up money and resources because you can't move forward until you get that worked out if you tag a guy you got to know whether he's going to be in the fold or not...

I hope they find a way to keep him but I just making sure I'm prepared and the fan base should be prepared for him leaving because it's a possibility..
Considering Jerry runs the team like a circus, going for the juggler is likely.

Well, he could’ve foregone signing with the Steelers and entered the workforce. Don’t act like he didn’t get something substantial in return. That said, I have no issue if he chooses to chase the most money when his contract is up.
That's not even a reasonable take. I understand why the league has the draft and rookie contracts and the salary cap. But what he said is 100% true.

I coached competitive softball for 20 years. Every year I would get some kid that would come tryout for my team and I would have multiple people telling me... oh you dont want that player, or their parents are toxic, stay away from them. And every year I woud add that player and never have any problem with them.

I remember this one year a teams opposing shortstop was cussing her coach up and down during the game because we were running hi teams arse off the field and he didnt know what to do to stop us. Keep in mind, this happened OFTEN, when an opposing coach did not know how to defend us on the bases or with our ability to hit away or play small ball. This girl was pissed, and rightfully so as the coach was yelling at his players, but it wasnt their faut, it was his fault. That same ss came and tried out for my team the following season and I gladly took her and only had 1 minor issue with her in 3 years, and it was basically because she was too competitive and wanted to fight a kid that put on a pretty hard tag on her.

Moral to my story? Pickens was pissed in steelerland just like AJ Brown and now Justin Jefferson are pissed. When you play with crap at the qb and you are a stud and want to win... it causes problems.

Pickens its getting extended to a huge deal... better start getting used to is.
Take one of those "kids" you are talking about and make them multi millionaires with groupies and the media and tell me that wouldn't have mattered.

Of course they won't ...........but the team cutting the checks def will.
As they should. But Pickens nor his agent will start negotiations “we know he’s been a problem before last year, so we’ll take less because of that.”

Players want assurance that comes with a long-term deal. The top-five salaries would put Pickens at about $28 million guaranteed. A long-term deal would put him at $100 million-plus guaranteed (Lamb's total guaranteed was $100 million). In a violent business where you don't know if the next season is going to be your last, that guarantee is a pretty big deal.

Now, some players do take a different perspective. Pickens has made just over $6 million in his first four years in the league, so $28 million would represent quite a raise. He might be happy with that based on what he's earned so far.

It's just the injury aspect that makes the tag a bit of a slap in the face. When a player has done well, he wants the team to show its appreciation with a bunch of guaranteed money. After all, this may be his only chance to cash in on his success.
He's done enough not well that there are legit concerns. He needs to realize that. Another year of good behavior will go a long way towards erasing that. Or he realizes that it's going to cost him in his pocket because of it.

Play action has been crucial during this run.
So important. When you can run the football everythibg works. The safeties and LB’s have to respect the run. Even the CB starts peeking in the backfield. When this team hss been its best is when we could run the ball. And even on defense. You have to stop the run to be a great defense. It’s a passing league because that’s more exciting than a 4 yard run. But those 4 yard runs win you games

Exactly. I think around $30 million is fair on a new deal. Or he can play on the tag and bet on himself to break the bank the following year.
He does scare me on the tag. But I think you could sell him on 30 mil if you throw a load of cash at him. Players want to get paid, but they want to win too. He’s an emotional player and I think he feels wanted here. And that’s a big enough deal that he can’t feel insulted. He might get more on the market but it might be on a team without a QB, or a crap team

Being a unrealistic fan is nothing to brag about. We're talking the business end of the sport, not rooting and cheering.
Well, you're being unfair and foolish not to give Jerry credit for this season's team business decisions. He has literally turned this team around to what it currently is, and it's going to get better.

Talk about completely missing the plot. We shouldn't have to ask players to take pay cuts to be here. And then label them as villains if they don't want to.
Then they should go play elsewhere as in another league. Let's see how much they will get paid there?

To be fair, hes only been a Cowboys player for barely 7 months and its important to keep in mind that this is his first real contract other than the rookie one.

Hes way outperformed his contract and is at the peak of his game. I honestly don't begrudge him for getting every red cent he can.

His family and future financial situation is more important than team loyalty to a team that hes barely played with.

And dont forget his responsibility to the "Brotherhood of Wide Receivers". ;)
Well then don't complain if he leaves elsewhere because of his greediness. Don't be blaming Jerry for being forced to play according to a salary cap.

His numbers are off. Only half the games are at home.
Are you saying they don't pay taxes when they play out of state? Or that guys who live in no state tax states have to pay taxes when they play in one of the bloodsucking states? That is wholly un-American right there.

I can't speak on that but my guess is, it requires much proof to enforce it.
A handshake deal on nfl contracts is strictly non-enforceable according to the CBA. If a player has an agent. The agent and the player, both have to sign a written contract.

I’ll blame Jerry for being inept at his job and not hiring actual finance people to manage his cap instead of engineers.
