Dallas Cowboys' victory over New Orleans Saints increases urgency for NY Giants

Thanks to the Cowboys win....Minny, most likely, won't be resting their starters in week 17 against the Giants. Assuming the Vikes win the next 2 games (which is likely against Carolina and Chicago).

Then, the Vikes will play at the same time slot as the Saints in week 17 in hopes of snagging the 1st seed, which is now possible due to the Saints loss vs. Dallas.

So, if Minny beats the Giants, Cowboys would take the wildcard playoff spot even if we were to go 1-1 in our next 2 games. Although, I obviously want the division and I think we take it anyways.

Anything can happen obviously, but that's what I gather from the playoff generator.

Regardless if we take the division or the wildcard, we kick NYG out.

If we get the div, philly gets the wildcard with the tiebraker over the giants.

At least I think?

If we get the division, no problem. But the Giants hold the tie-breaker over us for the wildcard if we both finished with the same record (In a worse-case scenario - i.e. if Giants finished 3-0 and we dropped 1 of our last two).

But now, the Giants shouldn't be getting a free win against Minny's backups so long as the Vikes would have something to play for in week 17. Which now they do, assuming they win the next 2.

If the Giants win out and we go 1-1, we're out.
If the Giants win out and we go 2-0, they're out, Philly's in.
If the Giants lose a game, they're out

Did i get that right?

I don't think so. The first thing you said and the last thing you said contradict each other.

Plus, the Giants have three games left.

If Dallas wins out, Dallas wins the division.

If Dallas goes 1-1 and NY wins out, it depends on what happens with the Packers and Eagles whether Dallas goes.

If the Giants lose a game, then Dallas would have to go 0-2 for the Giants to bounce the Cowboys.

Here's an awesome generator for ya davidb257.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/playoffscenario

Just select a starting point and click who you think wins for the upcoming weeks with the little tabs and the helmets will change to show who would be in and out.

Thanks to the Boys' win, we breathed a bit of life into the Vikings so the Giants don't get that easy win if the Vikes were to rest their starters. (I'm just hoping the time slots for the Saints and Vikes stay the same in week 17).

Although I think we take the division anyways. And I'll just hope for a Giants loss to the Skins or Panthers to make it a quicker death for the Giants as long as we win at least one more.

Basically, even if we beat the skins and lost to the Eagles (god forbid)..As long as Minny beats the Giants we're still in regardless.

Ya gotta try this link, it's great stuff.

Maybe this win against the Saints will make the Minny vs Gnats game mean something and Minny might play to win.

By definition, the Giants' matchup with the Commanders Monday night is not a "must-win game." After all, if they lose, they'll still be alive in the playoff race.

But making the postseason with a loss to Washington would be a very, very long shot.

The Cowboys' upset of the Saints' Saturday night nudged Dallas' record to 9-5. That means the Giants (7-6) will either remain one game back of the Cowboys for the sixth and final playoff spot with a victory in Washington or will move to two games behind the 'Boys in the win column with a loss. In the latter scenario, they'd still have a chance to catch Dallas because of the head-to-head tie-breaker, but they would have to win both of their final games while the Cowboys lose to the Commanders and Eagles.

At this point, the Giants are still alive in the NFC East race, but those hopes are flickering at best. The simplest scenario for them to win the division would be three straight wins and these dominoes to fall: Eagles lose three straight while the Cowboys lose to the Commanders next week and then beat Philly in Week 17. (That might be the only scenario in which they win the division, but I'm not 100 percent sure of that. Again, the one I just laid out is the simplest.)

Now, if you're the Giants, you shouldn't be worrying about the division long shots. Instead, you're focused on the Wild Card and rooting for the 49ers and Panthers Sunday. Why? Well, because you're going to want the Eagles to need that last game against Dallas. If they beat San Fran today and then knock off the Broncos while the Cowboys lose to the 'Skins, they'll clinch the division before the final game in Dallas. If so, Philly will sit their starters and Dallas could have an easy playoff-clinching win right there (depending on what the Giants do against the 'Skins and Panthers).

As for Carolina, you're hoping for the upset against the Vikings because you want to head to Minnesota in Week 17 to face a team with nothing left to play for. After the Saints' loss last night knocked them back to 13-1, the Vikes (11-2) once again have a reasonable shot at the No. 1 seed. With a victory over the Panthers, the Vikings would be one game behind New Orleans with an identical conference record.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the Giants' situation got a lot more grim Saturday night. But then again, their play made their situation grim before the Cowboys' victory. As my former colleague here at The Star-Ledger and NJ.com Dan Graziano (now of AOL Fanhouse) tweeted Saturday night: "Problems for Giants include Cowboys winning and Vikes needing Wk 17 game, but biggest one is that GIants aren't very good."

Basically, the Giants need to worry about themselves and hope the other chips fall into place.

What time do the Giants vs Vikings and Saints vs Panthers play?

Hopefully they play at the same time or the Saints have the late game and the Vikings have the early game.

Somehow, someway, the Giants will take care of themselves.
