By definition, the Giants' matchup with the Commanders Monday night is not a "must-win game." After all, if they lose, they'll still be alive in the playoff race.
But making the postseason with a loss to Washington would be a very, very long shot.
The Cowboys' upset of the Saints' Saturday night nudged Dallas' record to 9-5. That means the Giants (7-6) will either remain one game back of the Cowboys for the sixth and final playoff spot with a victory in Washington or will move to two games behind the 'Boys in the win column with a loss. In the latter scenario, they'd still have a chance to catch Dallas because of the head-to-head tie-breaker, but they would have to win both of their final games while the Cowboys lose to the Commanders and Eagles.
At this point, the Giants are still alive in the NFC East race, but those hopes are flickering at best. The simplest scenario for them to win the division would be three straight wins and these dominoes to fall: Eagles lose three straight while the Cowboys lose to the Commanders next week and then beat Philly in Week 17. (That might be the only scenario in which they win the division, but I'm not 100 percent sure of that. Again, the one I just laid out is the simplest.)
Now, if you're the Giants, you shouldn't be worrying about the division long shots. Instead, you're focused on the Wild Card and rooting for the 49ers and Panthers Sunday. Why? Well, because you're going to want the Eagles to need that last game against Dallas. If they beat San Fran today and then knock off the Broncos while the Cowboys lose to the 'Skins, they'll clinch the division before the final game in Dallas. If so, Philly will sit their starters and Dallas could have an easy playoff-clinching win right there (depending on what the Giants do against the 'Skins and Panthers).
As for Carolina, you're hoping for the upset against the Vikings because you want to head to Minnesota in Week 17 to face a team with nothing left to play for. After the Saints' loss last night knocked them back to 13-1, the Vikes (11-2) once again have a reasonable shot at the No. 1 seed. With a victory over the Panthers, the Vikings would be one game behind New Orleans with an identical conference record.
If you haven't figured it out yet, the Giants' situation got a lot more grim Saturday night. But then again, their play made their situation grim before the Cowboys' victory. As my former colleague here at The Star-Ledger and NJ.com Dan Graziano (now of AOL Fanhouse) tweeted Saturday night: "Problems for Giants include Cowboys winning and Vikes needing Wk 17 game, but biggest one is that GIants aren't very good."
Basically, the Giants need to worry about themselves and hope the other chips fall into place.
