Who said anything about Campbell. Their were plenty of second tier guys that signed good deals, which we could have felt almost no salary cap impact down the road by front loading those contracts.

Others mentioned him in various posts.

Peyton Manning and Dwight Freeney.
That's about it. Free agency is about matching up so many factors. Take a risk and you could end up with Marc Colombo. Or Nolan Carroll. Spend some money and you can get LaRoi Glover. Or Marco Rivera.
Dallas's strategy has been to go into the draft without glaring holes at positions. This leads to mid level or hole plugged types like Carroll, Durant, Cooper, Morris, Mayowa, and Brodney Pool. Some have been productive. Most have been dung.

what was wrong with Colombo?

Agreed.

Keeping that offensive line together is a major undertaking.

Look at other teams that have lost key OL due to not being able to manage the cap.

Dallas is in the position that they can franchise Lawrence in '18 and Martin in '19 if they need to.
No no no.... Paying your own free agents doesn't count.

For some reason.

Keeping your best players should not be considered anything special at all. COMMON SENSE.

Now looking around and going after 1 QUALITY FA on D- what is wrong with that? Now obviously a pass rusher is going to cost big. That decision has to be carefully weighed and this off season there really was no one worth the money.
NOW going else where. A REALLY GOOD 1 Tech= how much would that have cost?

Paea was playing well. Was he injured before or after signing?

Poe at 1 year, 8M would have been interesting.

Hamlin? Poor signing.

Carr? Bad.

Rivera? Awful.

Wiley? Pitiful.

And one of the worse all-time for ANY team Mike Vandergadt.

Feel free to take a seat at the kids table.

Wiley was a 1 year deal. Hamlin was given a 2nd contract by us. I named Rivera myself but you’re really nitpicking. Most of those you named weren’t expensive big name free agents like you claimed. The fact is we’ve had far more success with high priced free agents than you’ll admit.

L Davis
Glover
Sanders
And I think Carr was a solid signing unlike you.

You’re really putting a kicker as a high end free agent failure ?

DLaw, Collins, and Jones have been pretty good. Jury is still out on Jaylon and this year's rookies. We missed on Wilcox and Gregory. Those are the premium picks we have spent in the Garrett era. Hitchens, Brown, and Wilson have been pretty good mid round picks.

The only players that are close to aging are Witten and Bryant. The rest can reasonably be expected to be around for the next few years. We just need to keep drafting well but we will have extra cash available given how little we will be spending on qb the next 2 years. After retaining our OL I expect we'll spend some money on the defense in FA.

We forgot to mention Bruce Carter (2nd round), Mo (1st and 2nd) as misses. That's another 3 premium picks out the window. In 7 drafts, we have couple of solid players (DLaw, Crawford, Jones). Collins showed flashes but he has been disappointment so far this year.

That is bad when you don't have one pro-bowl level player in 7 drafts (13 picks in rounds 1-3). It looks like we might have one in DLaw on his last year but at that rate, it will be a long time before we have a very good defense.

Our window is 3-4 years with our offense being elite. There should have been more urgency to build the defense after 2014 when our offense was in elite form. We have done pretty much nothing since 2014. We drafted Jone, Gregory,Smith, Collins, Taco,Chido, Lewis in that time. They have potential but that's about it so far.

This team doesn’t allocate enough finances defensively. We’re bottom of the league. The window is now. I think buying 2 defensive stars puts us over the top in the NFC. It’s a shame this pro scouting department did nothing to help a 13-3 team.

They should have started getting busy after the 2014 season when we lost to the one legged ARod due to the defense. It was sad watching ARod, who could bare walk, making plays against our defense.

I didn't mention Bruce Carter or Mo because they were drafted under a different scouting director and HC. If you are going to play that game then you should include Lee who made all pro last year drafted one year before Carter.

The thing is that if we can manage to hold onto DLaw then we really only have needs for starters at S and LB. Middle coverage and run fits have been a problem and football IQ, and range are needed at those spots. Those are much easier to find than starting quality DL.

I guarantee every team in the league has a comparable list of names. You think everyone out there is batting 1000?

What? LOL. JG was the HC when Carter and Mo was drafted. Come back to the discussion after you get the facts straight.

This is all people are saying. Few, if any, have suggested they just splurge in FA and not try to continue to get better through the draft. What people are saying is that the team has gone to the ridiculous extreme where they think the draft is essentially going to fill every hole they could possibly have and because of that, they just sift through the crap bargain bin hoping they get lucky (and surprisingly, they keep failing).

No, they shouldn't have gone after Gilmore or Bouye to sure up the CB spot. But *******, they should have looked at a guy like Logan or Poe to give them a real 1 tech and not some off the street guy with an injury history that was cheap as hell and Marinelli really wanted. And maybe, spend the $6-7MM per year to bring in a legit, productive, very good SS in Hyde.

How much better does this team look drafting like they did and then having Hyde playing SS and a guy like Logan at the 1 tech? Better than they look now, that's for sure, and the deals they signed easily could have been met by the Cowboys. Logan or Poe aren't even committed to their existing team beyond this year, so there was little downside there.

To me it looks downright idiotic since you could have front loaded the cap hit and felt almost no effects if you were able to cut bait if the young players were outperforming expectation.

You guys who correct me on a point of fact and act like it's an automatic win are amusing.

The point about McClay still stands. The draft approach changed significantly in 2014 after the Floyd debacle the previous year. And of course we changed defensive schemes and coaching staff in 2013. Marinelli was made DC in 2014 as well.

But hey if you want to insist on including the years when Jerry was still handing out top dollar contracts to CB then have fun with that.

Well they did look to bring in JPP this past off season. He elected to take the Giants offer and stay with them.

Glover was not a high priced FA.... IIRC we got him later in the off season for a pretty good deal.

Carr was the poster boy for the fans ire here more often than not because his contract was so high. For a few years he was one of the highest paid DBs in the league.
