I don't care about your cap space. Having players you can put out there and not be a liability is more important. Fans worry too much about the money.
When Crawford isn't needed, he can be cut. If that's before the season starts, that would be great because it
does save the team cap dollars. If no one steps up to be a bona fide part of the rotation or a player we can trust to step in and not be a liability, then it's better to keep him.
Let me ask you this: You trust Hill to take over at 3-tech if something were to happen to McCoy? You going to pencil in Gallimore even though he hasn't taken an NFL snap? How about one of the DEs; you going to make them a full-time 3-tech and hope they can survive the beating?
My answer to this may change depending on what Hill and Gallimore show in practices. However, without a preseason, it's going to be hard to assess if they can step in if needed.
