OL usually starts to fall off around 32-33-34. If we keep Free no longer than a 3 year deal with performance incentives. If Parnell shows something almost on par with Free, let free walk sign Parnell and draft his replacement. Keep Dez, Murray fair market value which will be depressed because of Rice, AP being on the market and being tainted. Leary and Beasley tender them as high as you can without hurting, Harris is gone, Bruce Carter's best contract will be from Dallas I feel that other teams will be nervous about his ability to pick up schemes quickly, Sign Ro but he has hitched his wagon to the Coaches, Durant is the back plan if Carter leaves, Melton needs to show something but Marinelli if he is here may lobby for this guy, Hayden will stay but for cheap, moore will be re-signed for cheapish maybe a more guaranteed than is warranted but I think teams will try and get him, Selvie may stay but Spencer is gone. Carr will be re-structured/pay cut. I also think they may do somethings with Romo and Witten to get little more room.

You mean like when Tyron was RT and Free was LT ???

Apples and oranges.

Smith had all the tools of a LT but had never played LT.

Martin is made to play guard, it is his ideal spot...as he is showing.

I see him as an above average starter at RT and an all pro at RG. The way he is playing it is a no-brainer.

Yes! Agreed! They should just draft a right tackle or go with Parnell as the starter. I think will be fine with him.

We have 4 mil right now that rolls over, the cap is going to go up,

The NFLPA site, which is an official part of the NFL with access to the actual player contracts and is updated four times a day, shows Dallas with $10.217605M in available cap room.

I love places like Overthecap, but they are guessing.

Multiple players have incentives in their contracts and some of them will be met, so Dallas won't carryover $10M following this season.

Just to be conservative, I'll say the team will carryover $5m.

And the salary cap is expected to increase next season. The unadjusted cap right now is $133M, up $10M from last year. I'm again being conservative by upping the 2015 unadjusted salary cap by another $10M to $143M.

The Cowboys' $5M carryover from this season would lead to an adjusted 2015 team cap of $148M (I fully expect it to surpass $150M).

Romo and Witten's contracts are written to be restructured.

Tony Romo's is.

$12M or more in cap space can be created when the deal is restructured.

2015 is the last year the QB's contract is designed to be lowered for salary cap purposes.

Romo's 2016 cap number (est. $20.635M following the restructure next yr) is meant to count that much.

Jason Witten's deal isn't designed to be restructured next year.

Dallas would have to add one or two seasons to his deal in order to prorate a new signing bonus over four or five seasons.

The team isn't planning on restructuring Witten's again.

They could have done both Witten and Brandon Carr this year when things were tight in the off-season but opted to leave them alone.

Tyron Smith's contract is meant to be restructured next year, the team can create up to $8.2M by doing this.

Romo and Smith's deals are designed to create $20M or more in salary cap space next season.

Carr has no leverage to not take a pay cut because he won't have market value above an average starting CB.

Agreed.

The nice thing is the Cowboys won't need to go after Carr's base salary next year if they don't want to.

The team will be in fine shape with the cap even with leaving Carr's deal alone.

We will have plenty of cap room.

It's looking like it.

If Romo and Smith are restructured (+$20M), Doug Free's contract voids (+$6.53M) as designed and he becomes a free agent and Henry Melton's option (+$8.0495M) isn't picked up, we are looking at over $35M in cap space next year.

And that cap estimate is going from a 2015 top 51 roster I updated last Saturday while watching college ball.

That includes Restricted free agents Cole Beasley, Lance Dunbar and Sterling Moore with second round tenders (est. $2.296M, the maximum 5% increase) and RFA Chris Jones with an original entry tender (est. $1.502M). I'm not worried about losing Jones, I expect legit competition for him in camp next year.

I added players from our Practice Squad in order to fill out the top 51 and added two more when I removed Free and Melton.

You sign Dez and McClain.

That's my plan.

I want Dez Bryant for at least 7 years so I can restructure in 2016 and 2017 in order to keep the cap hits low.

You franchise tag Murray.

If need be.

I'm actually good letting Murray sign with the highest bidder in free agency.

Losing Murray to a big money deal and a couple of others to decent money would all but guarantee Dallas a 2016 third round compensatory draft pick (and some lower round picks, too).

First round tender Leary, second round on Beasley and a 3rd on Moore and Dunbar.

Ronald Leary is still under contract next year because he didn't accrue a season of service (minimum of 6 games on 53 man roster) as a rookie in 2012.

He'll be a RFA in 2016.

This rule is also why P Chris Jones and CB Sterling Moore will be Restricted free agents instead of Unrestricted.

Jones didn't accrue a season as a rookie in 2011 and Moore didn't do it last year.

Then it is take one of Carter/Durant, Spencer/Selvie and Free/Parnell.

I view Justin Durant as an alternative only if Rolando McClain leaves.

If McClain is the Mike, Sean Lee moves to Will and I let Durant walk.

I'd like to re-sign Bruce Carter, but we'll see how things go the rest of this season and it can't be crazy money.

I'm fine with Anthony Spencer and George Selvie taking the best deal they can find on the open market.

Doug Free, too.

I'd like to keep Jermey Parnell at a reasonable number.

I like how the OP just says "upgrade" for all the guys he wants gone. Like there are better players growing on trees that cost less money.

You're are probably wise to think this. Taking a chance on finding a walk-in starter from the draft -- I'm thinking 2nd round -- would be risky.

I do like Free but it would be best to find his replacement next year. I am not sold on Parnell as a starter but I am not sure I want to continue to keep him around as a backup.

My thought is to let the season play out before considering future roster moves. I was originally not going to comment on this matter (in this thread) but I decided to have fun with it without serious thought to how the rest of the season unravels. I just want to enjoy the ride for now.

I agree with everything except for Carter. I think he stays.

I hope your right. Main reason I think Carter could be a casualty is because of the contract Lee has and the contract that Ro will likely get. That is going to be a lot of money tied up at LB. I think Durant they may be able to work a deal and then they also have rookie Hutchins who is on a rookie deal. I think that makes Carter the odd man out.

What a terrible comparison. That was clearly broken, this situation now is not. Free was terrible at LT, we are not terrible at RT. We will keep either Free or Parnell, and draft a RT. We know Free is solid, the jury is still out on Parnell, but either way we'll plug in the RT that we draft if they play poorly next year. Plus, we drafted Tyron to be a LT in the first place

Rice is not on the market, he's suspended indefinitely

It is difficult to predict due to all the variables such as where we end up drafting (hopefully 32) and who we decide to sign before the end of the season. Have to remember the end of the season occurs after the Super Bowl and after the combine so we should have an idea (at least the scouts and coaches will) of who might be available and who we might want in the draft. Just those two items will give an idea of who we want to keep and who we are willing to let go.

You also have to figure in free agency. We might not think it is very important this year but I am sure the Jones and Garrett and coaches do. Case in point, if Suh becomes a free agent, would you want to take a chance with him or is it better to keep Melton, Oyoke, T. McClain, Hayden, Coleman, and Bishop. Of course cost comes into the picture big time but would have to consider the production also.

Anyway this is how I view the projected free agents currently.
Dez Bryant: Will be resigned before the new NFL year starts probably for more than I would like.
DeMarco Murray: He will get his money and probably will take less in stay in Dallas, why resign remember Jerry is a marketing guy also.
Doug Free: He won't stay for what he would be due on the contract but he will redo to a cap friendly one, he knows his best bet is here.
Ronald Leary: Probably a 1st round tender, no less than a 2nd although could see him get a six year deal that is backloaded.
Cole Beasley: Probably no better than a 3rd round tender, great to have but remember Street will fit there next year also.
Dwayne Harris: At best a vet minimum deal unless he really steps up, lots of guys coming out this year with return ability.
Jeremy Parnell: His time is now to prove he belongs and he has to be marketly better than Free, if not a replacement waits in the draft, remember also we have Weems who the coaches like on IR.

Defense:
Bruce Carter: He will get a contract offer abet not a large one to remain. Will be his call on staying.
Rolando McClain: He gets a new contract right after Dez before the new NFL year.
Justin Durant: He stays for more than most think. Marinelli considers him the best LB we have and can play all 3 spots.
Henry Melton: He won't be here for the contract extension money but good chance he stays for a better deal that is backloaded.
Nick Hayden: Nice player and hope he makes it on another team.
Sterling Moore: Actually probably gets a 2nd round tender as he deserves it.
George Selvie: He could stay although it would be a 1 or 2 year deal that might go away depending on draft.
Anthony Spencer: To me same boat as Selvie, think he will give Dallas a deal to stay.

How I see the defense possible in 2015:
DT: Crawford, Brent, Okoye, Melton, Coleman, Bishop, T. McClain, FA?, draft pick?

Will we keep six, maybe, Crawford is showing great signs, Brent is to be determined, Okoye signed a 3 year deal so chances good he stays if he shows enough, Melton will depend on play and contract, jury is out on T. McClain still, Coleman has shown enough so far as a good rotation guy, Bishop has a learning curve but coaches like his motor, what could upset the apple cart might be Suh although doubtful IMO, a draft pick that might fall like a Leonard Williams DT USC would change the projection.

DE: Lawrence, Spencer, Mincey, Selvie, Gardner, (Wilbur), FA?, draft pick

Lawrence will be the one definite, Spencer's back with a Dallas friendly contract and possibly Selvie also, Mincey is under contract but also easily cut if needed, Gardner had the coaches eye so see what he has next year, I include Wilbur because he can play OLB and DE and under contract, I would doubt at this point any free agent, could easily see us taking one if not two or three DEs in the draft, early, middle and late.

LB: Lee, McClain, Durant, Carter, Hitchens, Wilbur, Lawrence

Lee will move to either SAM or Will, McClain will be the MIKE, Durant/Carter could take either SAM or WILL, Hitchens has done a good job as a rookie, Wilbur can play LB and DE so makes him a value, Lawrence is on the outside looking in. Will Dallas sign all three of McClain, Durant and Carter? Probably doubtful although depending on the structure of the contracts and price, they could. Probably LB is best unit we have had in years.

DB: Church, Wilcox, Moore, Claiborne, Carr, Scandrick, Hamilton, Heath, Patmon, Pellerin, draft pick

Most are down on Claiborne for good reason but I seriously doubt we cut him anytime before 2016... he will be given a shot next year, Wilcox is getting better, Church is solid, Carr will be his last year in 2015, IMO; Scandrick is solid, Hamilton is a guy to watch in challenging either Church or Wilcox, Patmon might be a guy to watch, but betting we draft a CB no later than the 3rd round.

Offense is overall good and frankly the only positions I see us upgrading would be backups on the OL such as RT and trying to hit on a WR that falls in the draft. Could we take a QB in the draft, betting we might in the 4th, but oh how I would like to see an Amari Cooper fall to the late 1st and Dallas take him. The thought of Bryant, Williams, and Cooper in a 3 wideout set would be better than great, it would be an unstoppable offense as no team could ever put 8 in the box and go one on one with those 3, heck Murray might run for 3000 yards.
