In other news in Dallas, the Cowboys may soon have themselves a bit of a quarterback controversy when the end of October arrives. Dak Prescott has been great through the first four games, but this is Tony Romo’s team.

“There’s no doubt that Tony Romo has been a hot topic for about a decade,” said Sturm. “Half the city loves the guy and the other half wants to see a little something before they put him up with the city’s other heroes. We’re talking wins in January and maybe the big one in February. He’s been a divisive sports figure in this city for a long time. Every time he can’t play, the guy that replaces him is flat out awful.

“That’s a really difficult cap situation. The Cowboys might actually move on from Romo next March. I think it’s a real possibility. The public is ok with that going in. It’s not everybody.”

Barring Romo being unable to play anymore due to injuries,or just really lays an egg, I do not think Dak will become the full time starter before the end of the 2017 season. After that, Romo's job becomes much less secure.

It's pretty obvious this is going to happen at this point.

I love Romo but we need to work towards getting his contract off our books if we want to be able to build a defense. You don't leave Dak on the bench, it will become a distraction next season.

Its the right move. I hate the idea of releasing him and I really hope he chooses to retire. Best case scenario is (Im sure some will crap all over this even being a concept) Romo comes back this season and wins a superbowl and then retires to enjoy life with his family.

Im fairly certain Jerry will release him if not. Jerry has a soft spot for his guys but weve also seen him make the tough decision with Emmitt and Dware.

Although alot will be determined by the rest of this season. Dak will have a little more time to prove himself and Romo will likely be back and get one last opportunity. Unless Romo lights the world on fire the cap hit will be too much to swallow.

Best case scenario: Romo returns to 2014 form and wins a SB this year or next, retires on top, and hands the keys to a prepared/developed Dak for 2018.

worst case scenario: We cut Romo in 2017, Dak flames out and Romo wins a SB for another team.

There's way too much football left to play yet this year for there to be an intelligent answer to this question. If Tony comes back, stays healthy, and plays like he usually does, I think there's very little chance they cut him or move him unless somebody knocks their socks off.

No matter what, though, Tony's career in Dallas probably doesn't extend past the end of next season at this point, and it could be a lot shorter if he gets hurt again or does not play up to his usual level. That's what happens when you have more than one good QB on the roster.

Any choice the team makes could end in controversy.
Imagine:
A. Dak plays great, but when Romo is healthy, he starts again and stinks up the place. Controversy.
B. Dak plays great and wins the starting job, making Romo a highly paid backup. Dak starts to struggle while a healthy Romo sits on the bench. Controversy.

The media loves controversy, even low key guys like Sturm.

It shouldn't even be a controversy. Romo is at the tail end of his career, and we have a new guy that is showing that he is likely the future (should be current) franchise QB. It's time to move on. No controversy needed if we release him. We can move on, and maybe Tony can go to a team that is closer to a Superbowl.

Sounds like a win/win.

I dont think we are going to win a SB with this Defense even with Romo playing at 2014 level.
