Of course. No one is arguing that point. I'm a huge Dak proponent, and he is making the call a lot closer than anyone expected and he might make it even harder if he continues to improve. He isn't near as dangerous to a defense as Romo is, but better ball protection helps close that gap some.
But let's also be real here. Dak is going to have to open it up at some point against more dominant defenses or if he is behind. We have seen a little bit of that and there is no reason to believe he won't be able to do it, we just haven't seen a lot of it. The game plan is more conservative with Dak in the game.
People act like salary is of no consequence in deciding to move on from a player. But that isn't reality. I'm not saying you start a player because his salary is higher, but Romo's salary is a huge factor in "moving on" from him. He would be a really high priced backup (the combined salaries are the same no matter who starts and who sits) but if you start Dak and bench a healthy Romo you have pretty much played the card that you are cutting Romo. That would be a cap crippler for the next two years. That can't just be ignored.
If we're going to be real, with Romo coming off a broken back and missing his last 16 straight regular season games even when he's ready to play Dak is still going to be more dangerous to a defense because he's a duel threat that can run and throw. He's been very accurate this season completing almost 68% of his passes and he has 2 rushing TD's which is something you're not going to get with Romo. Sure, if we can go back 2 years ago and get the 2014 Romo he would be more dangerous to a defense but that Romo is no more with the injuries and advancing age. He's caked with rust and who knows how much this latest injury has slowed him down. Dak is getting better every week, he has a strong arm and a quick release. He knows how to get out of trouble with his legs and knows how to get down and avoid big hits.
As for Romo's salary the Pats moved on from Bledsoe only one year after signing him to a then record 103M contract. It's not hard for any team to move on from an aging, injury prone QB regardless the money they're making when they have a rookie QB who's been one of the most efficient QBs in the league this season. You have to stay with the QB you're winning with. Sitting Dak would stunt his development. You don't just put a player back on the field who's old and beat up just because they're making a lot of money. Romo is going to have a tough time improving on the numbers Dak has put up without any turnovers with all the missed games and coming off a broken back. People don't just get back to playing football after just recovering from a broken back.
I think defenses would rather face Romo than Dak at the moment. Romo can't get away from pressure and when he's rusty he turns the ball over. He had 3 INT's vs SF in the opener in 2014 due to rehabbing his surgically repaired back and missing a lot of work. He's had 8 INT's the past 2 seasons that can be directly attributed to rust. As for the game plan with Dak he's running the full offense, we're not holding back with him. He's thrown the ball a lot and has taken some shots down the field. We may have held back a little with him the first couple of weeks but we're not holding back now. He's averaged 7.7 per attempt which is more than Romo has averaged in 3 of his last 4 seasons.
