Dallas in 2009: What you THOUGHT would happen vs what DID happen

We all saw the media predictions of 8-8. Emmitt Smith said it, and so did several others across the media, and even on this board.

My question is, what did you get right, and what did you get wrong?

Did you think Romo was going to struggle without TO? Did you think Ware would have 24 sacks?

Did you think Austin would get his chance and break out? Did you think Brooking would help transform the defense?

I wrote an article back in May previewing the 2009 season. Looking back on it, I'd say it was fairly accurate. I didnt give Miles Austin enough credit, and thought we would force more turnovers on defense, but said that our offense would rival the 2007 production if we blocked well, and that if we protected the ball, we'd be fine.

I thought we would get more sacks on defense, and that Barber would get better as the main guy at running back, but with Brooking in the middle, and Felix staying healthy, we really didn't need either to be successful.

How about you? What were your predictions that came to be true, or false?

I predicted 13 wins or more and a SB win.

Couldn't understand how or why people thought we'd win only 8-10 games. At least not until our loss in Denver. Then I saw it.

We really were two different teams. Sept and post-Sept.

Back to your question. Most of what I had hoped for and predicted for individuals played out well.

Romo, Felix, Sensabaugh, Jenkins, Brookings, Spencer.

Austin far exceeded my expectations although I did predict he be a starter.
Williams failed terribly.

Long was til next Sept, but I'll go on record with another 13 or more wins and a SB prediction.

OMT - Ogletree wins a starting spot.

There was a thread last offseason about winning predictions (total games). I voted for 14 wins, but posted that I was cheating as I was including preseason, and we won 14 games counting preseason.

That's all I remember as I usually don't bother with predictions.

The only prediction I made was that this team would play better without TO, Tank and Packpunk and that seems to have happened.

I am happy with the way the season turned out, including the NO Superbowl win - I don't hate any teams.

I'm looking forward to next year.

I predicted 11-5, the first playoff win in 13 years, and a strong run in the playoffs.

2-3 ain't too shabby! Though not what I wanted by a long shot.

Quiet thread so far. I was down for 11-5, NFCE Champion, and winning at least one playoff game, IIRC. I also was a firm supporter of Tony Romo, though I said he needed to dramatically cut down turnovers, especially fumbles. I was glad to get rid of TO, and especially PacMan Jones. I thought cutting Ellis was risky, though I still believe that was the case and that we dodged a bullet having our OLBs healthy this year. I supported both Wade and Garrett, and feel vindicated on both fronts. I thought the Skins would suck and that either the Giants or the Eagles would end up not being for real. Not sure if that was born out or not, but at least it wasn't too far off.

For being such a homer, my expectations for the year were pretty much born out by reality. Speaking of reality, for any of you guys with the words 'realist' in your title or your sig or your tag line: how'd that work out for you this season? Anybody able to say with a straight face that they kept it real?

I agree 100% with letting Ellis go. I think having Ellis could have helped us this season, even if he was a whiner.

I support Wade as DC, not as HC. Maybe I'm a hater who just doesnt want to give credit? I dont know, I just still dont like him as a HC. As a DC he's one of the best in the game, and it showed on the field.

I dont think I have to say much more besides I've been behind Garrett and Romo from day one.

I thought the Skins would improve drastically, although I did say the Giants were nothing to be scared of, so I'm with you there.

I predicted 12-4, with NFC title/Super Bowl appearance.

With all the talk of it being a successful season, and how everyone around the NFL see's us differently, I'm not.

We still lost in the divisional round like in 07, only this time got crushed. I know the crowd noise was a huge factor, but still. We got whooped, no excuses. We had the chance to really impose our will early, and we failed to execute and after that, it was the ballgame.

I'm really excited about this draft, if we play it right.

This wasn't a thread designed to laugh at those who missed on a few, nor congradulate those who's were more accurate.

Simply a thread to look back on 2009, and what really happened vs what you thought would.

I've already said I missed on several. I thought Miles was JAG, I thought Roy would have a very solid year, I thought MartyB would really impress, and I thought Barber would go back to being Old Marion.

Idgit said it was quiet so I thought I would liven it up a bit. ;)

I said 9-7 to 10-6 with a playoff win.

We exceeded the regular season prediction and got the playoff win. I'm disappointed with the fact that we didn't even bother to show up to play the Vikes, but on the other hand, we won a playoff game.... and I was thrilled about that.

8-8 was a real possibility. If Roy doesnt go down. Who knows? Miles stepped up big time. No one saw those numbers coming.

Did you think Romo was going to struggle without TO?

Yes, I did. Sans Austin who knows what happens?

Did you think Ware would have 24 sacks?

I really did think so. As good as the defense is it needs to be better. Create turnovers and more sacks.

Did you think Austin would get his chance and break out? Did you think Brooking would help transform the defense?

Austin - I never thought they would put him in fulltime. As it turns out they had to be forced to do so.

I thought Brooking would be a force.

and that Barber would get better as the main guy at running back,

I thought we would put Barber back as closer where he was most effective. Money and birdbrains dictated otherwise and we paid.

I cant see how anyone could predict 13 wins with a WR corps that was untested and a Vet in Roy that was melting down game by game... but ok.

I am with this. Hoping KO gets on the field more.

I thought we'd have a top 3 defense and that Williams was much better than he showed us in 2008.
Well, he was better in 2008 than 2009.

I think KO starts. I hate tempering expectations. Don't care if the kid was an undrafted rookie with a ton to learn.

I saw what I saw. The kid looked like a future star to me.

Heh. Wake me when the wind changes enough for you to say 'I told you so,' Bleu. It'll have to be a strong enough blow to make your opinions do a 180, at least. :D

And I know it might be considered childish and annoying. I just don't care. There's got to be some consequence for being consistently, gloriously, shamelessly wrong. Or else the place gets overrun by just plain bad opinions like we witnessed last offseason. Nobody wants that.

That said, I also don't want to poop all over NextGenBoys nice thread, and that's kind of what I started doing. I'll just sit here quietly until or unless I'm called out again.

EDIT: Heh, heh. I didn't wait long enough for the image to load before responding. *Love* the trophy, but it doesn't even have my name on it!
Stupid, cheap realists. :). At least there's no reflection of Bleu, naked, reflected in it.

I thought Dallas would go 9-7 and they went on to win the NFC East at 11-5. I thought Bennett and Williams would have big years and boy was I wrong. I predicted Austin becoming a starter, and I also said he'd get over 1,000 yards and 10 TDs. (we all know how that story ended). I then said Dallas would be surprised with Olgtree and I was correct.

I said 12-4 and win a playoff game or two. I thought Romo would perform about how he did, thought the defense would take a step forward, and predicted in training camp that Austin was our best receiver.

The winning lotto numbers are....
