I like the idea of running the ball straight up the middle behind this offensive line.
.... No tricks.
Bread and butter time of possession winner every game.

Turner at times would call a flea flicker. So would Zampese.

Beyond a misdirection reverse and the fake of the same here and there, that is the extent of Garrett's imagination.

But that is okay. I would prefer the trainee master the basics of situational playcalling before he tries to employ what he learned in Jap Plays 101.

we do not need a trick play

Trick plays only work when you do something very well. And usually that is based on sucking in the defense to stop the run.

Landry was notorious for the gadget plays.

Garrett probably would be better off on All Pro versus ratcheting it up to Madden level.

If I were coaching a mediocre offense I'd hire a Trick Play Assistant and run a trick play once per half. The benefits would last all game as defenses would constantly have to be prepared for anything.

If some of the plays are successful, by Week 5 you wouldn't even need to run them anymore if you don't want to. Defenses would have to stay "ready" for anything and it would compromise the D-Coordinator's creativity.

If you were running a mediocre offense, you would not even need to hire someone to do this. Just do it.

But this is a high stakes league. One play can swing a game. When you are teetering on the edge, you are probably not going to call them.

Trick plays are probably saved for those confident in their game plans overall.

Tends to work that way.

The ironic part of this whole thread is the Garrette doesn't get to call the plays….how funny is that!!

For a while there it seemed like it was once a game!

Any clean set of downs past the 40 yard line. It was like clockwork.

Garrett could benefit from a couple gadget plays. When he's asked about it, he deflects to talking about play action or delayed draws. But I don't think he believes in gadget plays philosophically for some reason.

We've gotta have a team that can execute and win without gadget plays. If you don't play well, no gadget play will bail you out. That said, there's nothing wrong with an occasional trick play to sucker the other team's defense when they least expect it. Tom Landry used them.

Here's one. It's not the greatest angle, but Danny White hands the ball off and then runs out and catches a TD pass from the RB.

I think Coach Landry was a step ahead of other teams when it came to the benefits of trick plays. A trick play has the added benefit of causing more work for the opposing defense. The trick plays may not be successful , but the main benefit is that opposing defenses had to prepare all week for a trick play or two that the offense may or may not even choose to call during the game. Once a reputation for running trick plays is attached to a team, there is the benefit of added pressure in the mental part of the game. Bit may seem like a small concern for a defense, but when several of these small concerns are added together, it creates stress. The defense always has to keep the possibility of a trick play being called in the back of their mind. Every once in s while , the play is called and actually produces a big gain. It seems to take the "air" out of the defense when the play is a success. This is a small thing, but Garrett needs every advantage that he can get IMO. There us no excuse for Garrett, or any other coach, not to take advantage of the trick plays like Landry did. Robert Newhouse's pass in the Super Bowl win against the Broncos was a thing of beauty.

I love this formation Boise State runs in the redzone. they have so many plays they run off this. Sometimes it's 3 TE's...and it's a sweep. Sometimes they play action out of it....Last year they ran a tackle eligable. if the Cowboys could be just half this imaginitive.
