Gailey had a TE play where the TE away from the flow hit the ground on a chop block and then got up to receive the pass.

That was Bruce Coslet immediately after Gaily to set off the Campo Era (shuddering)

Those are nice and all but I'm much more concerned with the other side of the ball.
Very true words spoken. Its more of a just in case kinda thing. However, maybe used twice a year in the right spot could gain you just enough advantage to win another game or two.

There is one trick play, if used once a game, would fool practically every opposing defense. Too many defensive coordinators and players would be completely taken off-guard. Plus, it can be executed to perfection virtually every time:

Snap the ball with 6 - 10 left on the play clock.

Opponents are so acclimated to Dallas' snap count now, they would never see it coming.

Okay. It's not REALLY a trick play, but still...

Garrett could benefit from a couple gadget plays. When he's asked about it, he deflects to talking about play action or delayed draws. But I don't think he believes in gadget plays philosophically for some reason.

It may be less a difference of philosophy and more a difference of psychology.

It might be. I'm thinking of one specific interview on the topic, and the impression I took away was that he didn't really like the trick plays in the context of his offense, but I could well have been reading into that.

Bahhahahah trick plays.

Dallas hardly does play action pass or the delayed hand off anymore.

And you want more trick plays lolololololol.

2012-2013 season:
Despite that, the Cowboys had the lowest play-action pass rate in the NFL, by far. Romo attempted a play-action pass on just 10 percent of his dropbacks. The difference between Romo and the second-lowest quarterback, Eli Manning, was larger than the difference between Manning and the next 11 quarterbacks!

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/a...-in-2013/d9ac013d-ba45-4849-96ff-fab7da17df7a

Want jaw-dropping evidence that the Cowboys don’t embrace analytics and are unwilling to adapt to new information? Last year, Romo ranked last in the NFL in play-action percentage, attempting a play-action pass on just 10.0 percent of his dropbacks despite totaling a 109.1 passer rating on those passes.

In 2013, Romo ranks last in the NFL in play-action percentage, attempting a play-action pass on just 10.3 percent of his dropbacksdespite totaling a 121.2 passer rating on those passes.

All kinds of success on play-action, yet the rate has increased 0.3 percentage points? With that sort of improvement, we’ll only need to wait just over 37 years until the Cowboys reach THE LEAGUE AVERAGE in play-action percentage.

Oh, but the Cowboys can’t run the ball, you say, so why use play-action? First, Romo’s ridiculous play-action success is reason enough to increase the rate. But more important, play-action efficiency isn’t correlated with rushing success.

Defenders play situations, not past rushing efficiency, so the Cowboys don’t need a strong running game for play-action to work. If they implemented more of a scientific approach to decision-making over the faith-based approach they currently utilize, they’d probably know that.

I think that was Bruce Coslet and he used that play multiple times that season (2002) and I think it had good results each time.

I stand corrected. Was it McGee who was the TE on those plays? Something made me think Harris though?

Good play none the less.

That was a Bruce Coslett staple and it worked every time I can remember...

I think when an offense is running effectively with it's base offense then look to throw some type of flea flicker at the defense

Sometimes I think Garrett is stuck in the 90's thought that it doesn't matter if you know what we are doing, we are just going to keep it simple and out-execute you and be successful. The problem is that only works when talent is majorly in your favor and you have a lot of time to practice. Neither of those things exist in today's NFL with free agency and the new CBA. You need to give your team some competitive advantage, at the lowest level through disguise, but also by adding some unpredictability or randomness. Look at the Superbowl, you had Peyton Manning who is a master at execution and it didn't matter because the defense knew what was happening and had and first step advantage to lower the probability of success even with proper execution. At some point you have to show them a variable to take that step away.

Haven't seen Garrett run a single trick play since he's been HC.

Guess it's an ego thing.

Bill Parcells has won multiple Super Bowls and he wasn't too proud to run a flea flicker or half back pass.

Dust off the old Statue of Liberty play....

Just execute the offense well enough, get a lead, hopefully defense comes around as not to give up that lead. Use the old fashioned ground game to run out the clock.
Now that will be a game plan that after winning, fans may say...the entire game plan was a trick, did you see that....:D

I think we had a surpise onside kick last year, but IDK IIRC.

against the Saints I think
I beleived they recovered to, but then had to punt. I thought at the time, if they could get a TD from that, it could get them back into the game.
