Dallas should be picking very late in the upcoming draft. Probably between #30 and #32. That gives us a very picked over first round to choose from. If someone falls who shouldn't, naturally we pull the trigger on the best value which would be BPA.

What I am thinking about is whether there is more value to us this year in drafting a guy in the 1st round (and getting the 5th year option on the player) or trading back to the second and getting a pick or picks in return. Obviously, it would depend on the compensation we get for the trade back.

The most likely scenario would be a team wanting to move back up to get their pick of QBs at the end of round 1. Hopefully, the rich get richer in this draft. I would love to see us fleece someone in a slight trade back. Maybe swapping our #32 pick for a second, a third and say a fourth rounder next year.

With that pick in a trade back we could draft two of the following: a RT, a corner, a linebacker, or a DE, and a stud returner the following year and hopefully not give up much in terms of talent in the trade back. The problem is that in most years you aren't going to get an impact DE even at #32, let alone a trade back.

I think we can all agree we need defense bad...but it needs to be the right defensive player. I can see us taking a RT in the 1st, to secure that 5th year option. Free is getting old, Green is unreliable and it's pretty clear they see Collins as strictly a guard.

We need to get better at drafting defensive players. We have spent enough resources to have a better defense.

1st round - Mo, Jones
2nd round - Lee, Carter, Gregory, DLaw, Smith
3rd round - Crawford, Wilcox, Collins

Draft boards will change a ton between now and the draft but as of now looks like CB and WR is where the talent could be at the end of the first

Draft better defensive players? Instead of being 7th scoring D where should we be? I think people's opinions are skewed because everyone we pick on O turns into an All Pro almost immediately.

I can almost see a RT at 32 but then again that's why we drafted Green and he has played well this year.

When he is not hurt Green has played well. Hopefully he can stop the injury bug and play full time

I think the Cowboys like that 5th year option too much to trade back unless they get a ridiculous deal.

It's possible, but you could probably argue that the 5th-year option is overrated. I haven't checked the numbers, but it seems like teams are more likely to extend someone early or decline the option than they are to exercise it. It's mostly just a lighter version of the franchise tag.

The best positions to take at 32 would be SS or TE, C too but that won't be considered.

SS isn't an issue on this team anymore as long as Byron plays. Tight end will not get any time with Witten still here. We need guys that will actually contribute day 1. Save the depth for later picks

This. A trade down at that spot is optimal for getting the most bang for that pick IMO. However the team really values that 5th year.

IIRC, they believed they could trade down and still get Frederick, but didn't because they didnt want to lose that 5th year.

Forward that to Jerry Jones because I wouldnt most definitely like to trade out

unless a talent like John Ross slips due to size, then i don't see a must have WR other then Ross and Mike Williams out of Clemson. Corey Davis is tempting as well. I think due to this years corner and defensive end class is so deep that a corner or end with a legit 1st round grade could be sitting their at our pick. But realistically TE, CB, LB, DE in that order is most likely to be BPA at our pick.
