I think that if one of the pass rushers fall , Werner, Jones, Moore - that Dallas should take them and immediately remove the franchise tag from Spencer. That frees up $10.6M right there.

Sign Huff, Winston, and Burnett (all with ties to state of Texas) with that money and and several holes are filled for a couple years. (yes I realize that all of them will probably be signed long before the draft -- but I am wishful thinking that they will still be unsigned and available)

Use the second round to draft your 1 tech (Williams), and then you have a rotation of Lissenmore, Williams, with the 3 tech of Hatcher, Bass, and Ratliff can swing between the two keeping him fresh. Ware, 1rd pick, Crawford for the DE's. Carter, Lee, Burnett with Lemon, McSurdy, Wilbur at the LB. Huff, Church, Johnson at the two safety spots, and keep the 4 CB's you have.

With the 3rd round take Barrett Jones -- hope he falls if not Schwenke. That leaves you with Livings, Jones (Schwenke), Bernie, Costa, Killa, Leary, Arkin for three spots and backups and you have improved the smarts on the line immensely. Free either restructures and is the swing or is a June 1 cut saving even more $$$$, and Parnell is the swing.

With the 4th round, take either a developmental QB or your backup RB. Lets say Kenjon Barner, Christine Michael, Matt Scott. If it is Barner, then you keep Tanner, if Michael, keep Dunbar. If you like Tanner and Dunbar - take the developmental QB here.

With the 5th round, take a look at backup TE. I don't think Michael Williams lasts till the 6th round, take a look at him here.

With the 6th pick -- take my pet cat - Patrick Lewis. I thought he did a great job this last year, but not sure why he is rated so low. He seemed to be fairly quick, smart, had very few problems with the shotgun snap, was big and strong.....His 40 times from what I read are close to Joekel's. 6th rounder that I think could become a starter for a long time.

So Jones (Schwenke), Lewis and Winston as new linemen this year (guessing two start).
Loss of Spencer but added a 1st round pass rusher, and a 1tech on the defensive line. Added Huff to go with the two young safeties. Added Burnett to the two starting LB's. Added a backup RB and a blocking TE.

JJ drafted for value with taking a pass rusher with the 1st rounder.

I could see this happening if Werner or Moore or Jones fall to 18.

If Livings starts at one guard, and Jones(Schwenke) at C or G, can Costa, Killa, Leary, Arkin, or Bernie hold down the other spot?

Next year you are drafting S and OT high and you know how Crawford and Wilbur have developed.

Lot's of good stuff in here, but as you mentioned, the timing would make it really tough to pull off.

You can't REMOVE the franchise tag from Spencer, once he signs his franchise tender all you can do is work on a long term deal or trade him.

That's right. Now that's he's signed it can't be removed.

You may be very correct, but I looked it up and this is what I found.

Can a franchise tag be removed?

The team can remove the franchise tag at any time. They have up until July to sign the player to a multi-year deal before the terms of the franchise tag kicks in.

That is if the player does not sign the tag, I believe. Once he signs it, then he can 1) play the season on the tag, 2) get traded, 3) sign a new contract

As stated previously, the team can only remove the tag if the player has not signed it.

(c) If a player subject to a Franchise Player designation accepts the Required Tender, the resulting Player Contract shall be fully guaranteed if the player’s contract is terminated because of lack of comparative skill; as a result of an injury sustained in the performance of his services under his Player Contract; and/or due to a Club’s determination to create Room for Salary Cap purposes.

Am I missing it from above. The amount has to be paid, but the club can remove the tag -- even if he has accepted -- to create room for Salary Cap purposes???? But he becomes a FA.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but doesn't this above mean that although he would still get his money -- it wouldn't count against the cap. If it did, how would it help a club to create room for Salary Cap purposes?

You are asking if Jerry is willing to pay $10.6M for nothing?

Not for nothing, but for $10.6M off the salary cap which would add a starter or three I hope, and further increase the chance of winning that elusive SB before he croaks.

Jerry isn't going to pay Spencer $10.6 mill just to get salary cap space, we can all forget about that plus the fact then Spencer would be a free agent and we would get zero compensation for him.

The Cowboys also learned that Anthony Spencer will sign his $10.63 million franchise tag. Jordan Woy, the player’s agent, announced the decision on Twitter. By signing the franchise tag, which Spencer will do early next week, it protects the linebacker-about-to-turn defensive end from having the tag removed and released at a later date if the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal.

Anthony Spencer finally signed his franchise tag contract with the Dallas Cowboys. It is actually a slightly disappointing move because I really hoped Dallas would smarten up and realize that $8.8 million was entirely too much to pay someone who has been nothing more than a run stopper over his career. If he didn't sign it, they could rescind the deal and use the money elsewhere.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2013/03/henry_melton_accepts_franchise.html
Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton has accepted the franchise tender from the Bears and will sign it in the near future, his agent Jordan Woy said on Twitter.
Last week, the Bears applied the franchise tag to Melton. Once he signs, Melton will be guaranteed $8.45 million, the tender amount for defensive tackles, for the 2013 season. That ensures the Bears don't rescind the franchise tag, which they could do. On the flip side, Melton surrenders the negotiating tool of not showing up for offseason workouts and perhaps showing up at training camp.

keep Spencer--he could be a beast in the 4-3

I agree, but if you could just get a 7th out of him in trade........you would be trading Spencer for a starting RT, starting FS, starting SAM, and a 7th rounder, and be selecting his replacement with your 1st pick.

Spencer is good, and no I don't think they can cut him, but is he worth three starters and a draft pick (whatever the number) --- with all the holes that Dallas needs to fill?

You can get a lot more than a 7th out if him.... Goodness if Harvin brought a first, third(2014), & a seventh what do you think Spencer would bring? He's an all-around better football player and I'm sure New Orleans, Pittsburgh & many more 3-4 teams would've loved for us to just let him hit the market.
