First, it was Pro Football Weekly's Draft Preview and now this . . . what the hell's the world coming to? (sigh . . .)

Mayock needs to make himself draft report, that guy is heads and shoulders above Kiper and McTurd. By the way Dane Brugler puts out the Lindys mag and they do top notch work on it, I've bought it for the last 10 or so years.

Mayock is the man now he actually gives you insight instead of over played tape

That guy is the best in the business, his football knowledge is incredible. He's someone I'd love to meet and just be able to pick his brain.

By the time pro days arrive, the analysts like Kiper have already seen tons of game film, and spoken with coaches, etc. If a pro day changes a scout, or analyst's, opinion then they probably weren't doing their due diligence to begin with.

What Kiper is really good at is giving good information on small school guys or lesser known guys, whereas a lot of other "draftniks" just know about the top 250 or so. I pay attention to Kiper mostly in rounds 4-7

I've honestly never read any of his draft reports. Were they printed and sold on magazine stands?

I don't know. I ordered mine by telephone and did so every year for over 25 years. Again, I ordered it primarily for all the info contained about every player. Kiper is not liked by some people evidently, but he was very thorough in his research and watching film. I have even talked with him by phone and he took time to answer my questions.

He along with Joel Buchsbaum (PFW) made the industry.

People like Todd McShay owe him a great debt of gratitude that they have full time jobs covering the draft.

That fraud on NFLN Mike Mayock too.

I was stunned and weeped a little when Berman mentioned it during last year's draft. I kind of felt like I should have been consulted first.

I'm like Chuck. I have stacks of his reports dating back to the early 90's. They're my version of Playboys.

I knew he was considering retirement, but opting to point us to Insider was disappointing. These other guys can crack on him all the want, but Kiper is KING....all the others are wannabes who wouldn't even exist without Mel.

Give Kiper credit, he created an industry and a career for himself that I guarantee 99% of us would love to have. I have about 10 of his draft guides and yes he did love him some Romo back in the day.

I used to always get the Sporting News guide and now that is gone too. Is there anything left?

I respect anyone who works the draft year round. Kiper was the original. He's the first draftnik who took it in front of the camera with any success. Buchsbaum tried it but he had no personality. He was a walking encyclopedia of football but he was terrible on camera. To this day I'd say there is nobody who knew more about the draft prospects than Joel, but he had the charisma of a school bus fire. He didn't need to keep me interested, I love this stuff, but he wasn't attracting the casual fan to the draft.

Mel Kiper Jr. is as responsible for how huge of an event the NFL Draft has become as anyone. He's been the face and voice of the draft for over 20 years.

Kiper is just adjusting to the business model at hand.

If he wasn't supplying "Insider" info via ESPN, which no doubt he gets compensated for he would have some kind of subscription site.

He's still supplying information... just going about it a different way.

I will say putting out a printed book... that's a lot of work. If you haven't done it give it a go. First put together all the information that needs to go in it, then create it, then print it, then get it distributed. There's a lot of labor involved and a great many tiny details that can derail the entire project.

I have gotten every guide from him since 1994. I have also talked to him on the phone a couple times when I ordered. He was always nice. I think Im going to go with our lads. Any other ideas?

Who cares what Kiper thinks....He's a moron

The man has never shown up to a single pro day according to Gil Brandt

It took six posts into the thread for someone to call a media personality a moron or an idiot. I am shocked.

That was my same reaction when this news broke last year.

True story - I'll never forget calling Kipers office to buy my draft guide (late 80's) and actually spoke to Mel's wife. I wanted to ask her if she was jealous of Mel's hair but didn't.

Mel Kiper was the catalyst to all this draft craze that we see now.
He's been at it for over 35 years.

Like everyone who ever predicted draft scenarios. he has been wrong plenty of times.
But ask that guy about any player anywhere and he'll at least have an opinion...and that is 1-2 years before the player is even on anyone elses radar...especially someone like Broaddas or Gil Brandt (in his current state).

I do think once the detailed analysis of a particular player comes up, there are many guys who may have a better opinion that Kiper.
He's always seemd to be more of a guy that knew 10X more players overall but only got you 90% of the answer.

Cracks me up that so many on this forum pile on him and act as if they know more about the players than he does. Ac ouple of utube clips and reading a few mock drafts makes everyone expects I guess.

Then again, nobody says anyone has to like anyone....or respect them either, I guess.
